Cherub won the concourse d'elegance and it did look sweet, but not my top boat at the show... here's my 3, wonder what other's thought...

1. Fireballs - just so neat, tidy and well-sorted boats, with helpful peeps on the stand too
2. Icon - just liked this last year, now I want one!
3. Cherub - yeah, the boat on the class stand was v.nice and the 'through the ages' display was great stuff too

1) The old wood decked Europe tucked away in a corner
2) The classic Finn (Hmmm, I seems to like varnished decks...)
3) The Icon, for being fresh and new, but still thinking of the average sailor.

However, I didn't really see a boat at the show that made me go "I want one, and I want it NOW!", which is a little disappointing...

1) Quite nicely sorted Alto (this one had an all carbon rudder stock) and good to hear the new DIY price structure of around 7 grand
2) A lovely Contender, but seemed by comparison at over 8 grand lots of money for not as much as the Alto
3) The Solution, every time I see it, I'm just drawn by it's modern looks and simplicity.

Worse boat of the show, that 'cheats charter', the Rooster Streaker, it just goes against everything I used to believe is good about dinghy sailing.

For me

The canoe looked great for a boat that's a few years old now and used regularly and an interesting build and rig setup.

The old National 12. How can a boat that old still be sailing and look that nice.

Iso. Again an old boat but beautifully turned out... when did you last see an ISO in any thing other than used condition.

And why have I picked old boats... well none of the new boats really got me exited.

I thought the Icon looked great. Well built and well presented but it looked big to me!... but then we are 12 sailors so everything looks big to us... and like the X1 (another big boat) the philosophy of keeping the boat simple just makes it look dull

Its probably just me but Topper, Laser etc make dumbed down boats for the masses... cant the specialist builders make clever, slightly more technical boats for the enthusiasts. The Scorps, Larks, Merlins, 12's etc all look great, interesting and the strength of the fleets suggest that we, the keen sailing public, arent put off by a bit of string. I'd get more excited by these boats if I could look at them and imaging all the tuning possibilities rather than just practice doing the same things all the time.

Hi Ian,
It was great to talk to you and Mrs F at the show. Glad you like the Icon, but I've got to reply to the last bit of your post!
With a fairly trick carbon mast, dangly pole, foam sandwhich construction and very light all up weight, I would say it is not dumbed down at all, and not comparable to anything that Topper or Laser sell.

The reason for the lack of string is not due to dumbing down, but a result of it's Australian inspiration and heritage. If you look at an NS14, they are very simple, for example nearly always with only one (shared) toestrap per side and at least one of their most successful boats doesn't even have an outhaul. Keep it simple, keep it light, keep your head out of the boat.

Hi Peaky

Great to meet you as well

Its not a criticise of the boat just my view on the whole keeping the boat simple philosophy.

Personally my sailing isn't ever going to get that much better, As I get older and less fit there is less I can do physically to make a boat go well... but with age comes a greater understanding of whats happening so my ability to tweak a boat can help keep me in the mix. Simple boats with no string to pull, long stable hulls making trim and balance less sensitive and general simple layout means I am back to relying on being a better sailor... which isn't going to happen.

Each to there own though. there are a lot of people that like the boat so I'm sure it will be a success.

Ironically I'd have preferred it as an NS14, small manageable sails, smaller more responsive hull etc but then we are smaller than the target market so I can see why its gone the route it has and as I said it looks great.

O and catching up on a previous comment... yes the cunningham needs to be easily accessible. One of the great benefits of modern sail cloth is that the cunningham can now do so much more than it used to and is much more than a pull on when windy control now. But when I questioned Mike at the show he did explain that this is free to be moved to a more convenient position so I guess its not a problem.

Ian,
I think the Canoe on the stand is pretty new.

Boat for me was the paint craft Scorpion and the D-one.

I was told its 3 or so years old... either way it was not fresh out of the mould but still looked great... and yes the D1 does look much better than last years with the revised fore deck and pretty carbon trimming.

It was nice to meet Michael and Rodney on the stand as well, put a face to a name etc. They were as enthusiastic as ever about the boat.... and that was on Sunday afternoon when they could be excused for being a little less excited... must say something about it!
