Hi Conrad,
By chance Hayling Island Sailing Club put together a race team and I was standing in the bar at the right time!  We have been working together for over 4 years now with the intention of trying to be one of the Race Teams at the Olympics. It is a huge time committment and a thankless task but we have a laugh, get on with it, learn a lot and have a birds eye view of some great racing.

Each Race Team consist of about 30 people (Race Officer, 3 x ARO's, Timekeeper, Spotters, Mark layers, Course Safety Officer and a safety team etc).  We have seen about 4-5 people leave the HISC  team for various reasons over the years but have been easily filled by the ever growing reserve list.

The other race teams have been built around existing Race Officers 'contact base' and suggestions from the RYA and ISAF for suitable people available. In a way it is a classic example 'who you know' but if you don't cut the mustard or your face doesn't fit they soon find an excuse to get you off the team.

That makes me feel better about failing to apply in time in the first place!

Thanks Marky, I figured as much. Would be lucky to be given a job as car park attendant or trolley dolley. (Nothing wrong with trolley dolleys of course) but after all the hype and spin of volunteering, it is a pity that it was meaningless.

I hate to say that you are probably, without knowing it, volunteering for on-shore vacancies (car parking / marshalling). Most of the six Race Teams required have been working together and sorting themselves out for the last couple of years. LOCOG have a number of tiers required to run the sailing event (Top tier being Jury, second tier is Race Team (including safety), third tier is on-shore. Tiers 1 & 2 are approved by ISAF with a rubber stamp from LOCOG. I am part of one of the Race Teams and we have run the Finn & Star fleets for the last 2 years at Sail for Gold and will be doing so at the Test Event in August. Although we haven't been confirmed as a Race Team for the Olympics we have already been vetted by both LOCOG and ISAF and have had to run some pretty major additional events to see if we are up for it (Laser Worlds, Youth Nationals etc).

If it's anything like athletics then all the key personnel already know they have been selected eg track and field officials.  those still awaiting interview are for minor roles.

Are you the Ralph T who will be PRO at the NSSA regatta at Grafham?
the same, but different...

Had given up hope of being invited for interview & visits to the volunteer site were becoming less & less. However, having read this thread today, thought I might as well have another look & to my surprise, found an invite to select an interview time at Warwick Uni.

I have not received any emails & regularly check my junk & Norton folders, so don't assume that you will get an email.

Good luck if you are still waiting

Rumour is that race officers are human like everyone else, but then .........

Yep Radixon, email invitation & links to choose a time at Excel.
Also noted that "my application" has been taken off-site and is no longer editable, other than by telephone.

Still waiting to hear back from them. I take it you got an email rather than having to log in to the site?

Got an interview at Excel, London next Saturday (26th Feb(. I was able to choose any one of about a dozen 1.5-hour slots, at overlapping half-hour intervals; every single one of these still appears vacant, so does that mean everyone else has declined ?
