All,
I need to replace the Jib sheets on the 5o5 after the outer
core shredded at the nationals. Has anyone got any recommendations for rope and supplier? i would like to be
able to taper the sheet if possible.

Cheers,

Russ

I really like the Marlow Excel Fusion line of ropes. I have recently put a tapered 8mm Main / Jib sheet and 6mm tapered kite sheets on the Cherub. They look great and it's really easy to work with. Unlike a lot of other ropes, the Fusion has got dyneema in the outer and the core so is really durable. The only downside is the price... can't win 'em all I guess!

I'd second that.  Just switched to Marlow Excel Fusion 75 on the 700 and really pleased so far.

Consult with your crew... cheesewire sheets may bring you pain. The crews union is everywhere, watching.

3rd....Fusion. Low water take up makes it lighter when wet. Colours aren't that exciting though and as Tim says, pricey.

I'm the crew on my 700!  6mm still gets my vote.  Saw me through Garda without any problems...

How easy is it to taper?? is it just a case of removing the
inner from the outer, then splicing the outer core into the
inner??

The Marlow website says it's easily tapered:

http://www.marlowropes.com/index.php?option=com_content& view=article&id=74:excel-fusion-75&catid=51:dinghy-w indsurfing&Itemid=197

and I think there are tapering instructions on their tech page, whether it covers fusion or if there are different techniques for fusion I don't know. Can't taper sheets on my boat so I've never tried.

It is easy. As you say, pull the inner out through a hole in the outer, chop the outer off so you have a bit of a tail, then pull the outer back inside the inner. I generally whip mine at the join and stitch it a bit too just to be sure but you don't have to really.

Being the crew on the Cherub I do everything apart from steering... 6mm kite and 8mm main is fine! (I would have 6mm mainsheet but wouldn't want the helm to wear his fingers out when taking control of it downwind )
