Casio Sea Pathfinder. On "special offer" at Purple- "Reduced to £19.99" from over £30.

At Andark, £29.99

P&B, £27.50

Trident, £24.95

The exact same watch. £19.99 at Argos. Available from your nearby high street or retail park

Seriously, marine industry, wake up. I appreciate that Argos have economies of scale. But this is ridiculous. I just replaced mine (I was going to anyway, as I'd destroyed the strap, and I'm not paying to replace the strap of a twenty quid watch) as just lost my last one- it's a damn good watch for the price you pay. I'd have bought it from a marine retailer if by doing so I wouldn't have been pointlessly ripping myself off.

It gets worse though- on the Purple Tuesday email in my inbox & news piece on this site the watch is advertised as being £19.95, but if you click on it, it is £19.99. A tiny difference, but still potentially breaking consumer law, no?

Welcome to the world of bulk purchaser discounts... I would not be suprised if Argos are selling at a fair sized profit at a lower price that most sailboat shops can buy at...

If anyone wants a 330mm x 20mm basic (no d-ring) velcro strap as a replacement I am still selling some on ebay for 99p each!  Just search for velcro watch strap 330mm and you should find them.  Longer than normal straps so go round drysuits better

Think mine was less than £15 delivered (from a shop with warranty) from eBay... I would still class that as poor value though as (IMO) they're ugly, complicated and fragile.

As soon as someone can assure me that Optimum Time has sorted out the quality of their watches I'll buy another of them... from Ronstan.

I got my Casio Sea Pathfinder watch back in 2005 (maybe from Argos)...

I'm pretty certain that I paid £25 for it then. I guess that not everything has gone up!

Are you "THE" Matt Jackson, ex-Everton toggerist and FA Cup winner?

Yes I am "THE" Matt Jackson... just not the one you are thinking of. I (or more correctly my parents) claimed the name 2 years before him. I'm not a Touring car/motorbike or aircraft racer either.

I've often had occasion to curse the Consumers' Association (Which?) and their campaign to abolish Retail Price Maintenance all those years ago. In those days, competition was confined to the manufacturers/importers, and the retail trade and we punters could relax. You could buy from wherever was most convenient, safe in the knowlegde it would be no cheaper round the corner.; nowadays every significant purchase involves trawling round for the best deal, then all the hassles of mail order ("Sorry, you were out", returns policy etc.)
