There was an interesting discussion on a specialist rules nerd forum about which was the worst rule in the book.
So - which rule would you re-write if you could? What's wrong with it, and more importantly, what would you replace it by? Gordon |

mark rounding rules
Cos they are all complicated and if there is room go for it, if not get out the way, sounds like driving rules in a foreign country! ![]() |

Except that when you are driving there are a certain number of rules (which may be unwritten, or not exactly as written) that most people follow. In the UK everybody more or less agrees that we drive on the left, for instance.
So, what would be the rules/ conventions/gentlemens agreements that you, radixon and others, would apply at marks? I would suggest (hope) that we are all agreed that breaking boats is not to be a normal part of racing. Gordon |

Gordon. The rule I find difficult is the windward/leeward rule often just after the start. It occurs in crowded starts when the leeward boat is calling for the windward to keep clear but is already so close that the windward boat has no room to manoevre, there is a touch and you spend the whole of the beat arguing about 'room and opportunity'. Perhaps it is a practical problem in that RO's should be encouraged to set much longer start lines. djdhi |

I don't think you should have to do any more than a 360 as a penalty. I like
that penalties are there but 2 full spins is frustrating when a 360 is bad enough. ESPECIALLY if a jury boat decides you're pumping. If a jury boat makes a bad decision, I don't want to have to do a 720 for it. Seeming as I've been stung by more bad decisions than good ones, I'd rather be doing a 360. I don't mind having to do spins if they're right and I pushed it a bit far but if I haven't done anything at all and they flag me for the hell of it, I don't want my race completely destroyed. Human error on the jury side should be accounted for by not allowing them to administer such harsh punishments in the first place. Edited by Doug.H |

Boats with a kite hoisted have right of way over a boat beating/close hauled to windward!
