Our Dell PC which runs on Vista Home Premium came pre loaded with McAfee which is about to expire in 30 days.
Most people I know have said Mcafee is resource hungry and slows the system down (which I cannot confirm as I have not used the PC with anything else!) and as far as I know it has never let us down. That said it has never told us its found anything, so who knows? The 2010 version does not appear in many top ten comparison reviews on the net and when it does it is fairly low. I am happy to pay for decent software and have been a bit suspicious of the free stuff, so can anyone recommend anything worth having? It's got to be simple user friendly and no hassle. The Norton Total Internet security package seems to get good all round ratings, but I would welcome your views.... |

I use Avira it's a free one it's not great but does the job if you run a
scan every week and know what your looking at. Doesn't seem as resource heavy as norton or mcafee. |

Of the free bunch AVG and Avast are top of the bunch - which one is better varies from release to release but for what its worth ive been very happy with both but currently use Avast.

Personally, I use AVG (The paid edition). It is truly
fantastic, blocks viruses from getting onto your system really well, and in the unlikely event that one does get through, it will notify you straight away. It's easy to use and it doesn't slow down the computer. Whatever you do, do not bother with Norton. It is completely rubbish, when I upgraded from Norton to AVG, there were about 200 viruses on our family computer than Norton had failed to pick up. Don't use anything free either, unless it is from a reputable business. You will run the risk of downloading something dodgy. Feel free to PM me if you would like any more advice :) |

AVG free version + Zone Alarm free firewall seems to give a reasonably safe surfing experience. AVG does have anti spyware functions but if you want dedicated spyware control then try Adaware.

I have AVG on three machines - it is cheap, light on resources and works great, plus they are really helpful if you need to call them for help

I always found AVG a bit heavy. On our Windoze kit we use Kapersky - cheap, effective and unobtrusive. Difficult to spell though.
Macfee - yuk. And after some bad times with Norton in the pre Cambrian era - never again. But I understand they are better now. Zone Alarm since the Zone Lab days become bloated. Mind you on our real computers - Mac and Ubuntu - we just chillax. |

forget all the above, and go for the free and best one I have found to date.
Download "M**rosoft Security Essentials" from MS, it works, catches even unknown ones that Norton missed (personal experience hitting our network at work) If anyone asks at work, thats all I will recommend now. So why is ic * out? Edited by radixon |
