What do dinghy sailers who wear contact lenses do? I figure it's not possible to wear them cos you'll lose them as soon as you capsize? I've had a pair of prescription sunglasses made up, but I'd obviously prefer not to have the worry of losing them (very expensive!). If I do lose them, I can't see past my nose! Wondering if any other dinghy racers have had this problem and if anyone has any solutions? Many thanks xx |

See reply on the other thread started in Dinghy Development on the same topic. Then again, I could answer something completely different here, just to confuse matters!!!

Never mind... give this thread another 2 days and we'll have 22 pages of various chatterings, only loosely connected with vision!!!

My father sometimes wears contacts whilst sailing, but he only uses disposable ones anyway so it dosn't matter if he loses them. He sails a laser, so gets wet quite reguarly! but he dosn't seem too bothered so they can't come out too easy. I've just got glasses and amazed at what I can now see, so I might well try out contacts for sailing...

I wear prescription sunglasses which works well for me. You must use a retaining strap to keep them on!
One point that is quite relevant is UV rays.... In an ideal world every one should be using sunglasses because damaging UV rays still effect your eyes even when it is cloudy.
You only get one pair of eye's so it is worth protecting them.

I wear contact all the time when sailing, not many problems and haven'tlost one yet. i sail bigger boats so no chance of going under water (unless theres a serious problem) but spent lost of time doing the bow and generally soaked from waves.\Main problem is the offshores and having to get sleep, only sleep for an hour or so eyes don't feel to bad any more and things go a little sticky. Generally after long races i don't wear lense for a few days to let my eyes get back to normal. salt water in the eyes hurts a lot but not as much as chillies.
