Im in the process of getting a new Enterprise built for but the boat will come just as a bare hull. I therefore need to find someone to spray finish the boat for me. 1.Has anyone ever got a car bodyshop to spray a boat for them? Can they do the varnish? any recommendations for a good body shop? 2. Presumably the boat will need epoxying? How should this be applied? what epoxy? 3. Will normal 2pac car paint work or do you need something different or something adding to the paint? I would love paintcraft to finish the boat for me but its just going to be too expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations of people that do a good spraying job at an affordable price? |

dont need a spray finish. a well rolled finish is just as good 2 pack international perfection paint rolled on will look just as good as a spray finish. just need to get the undercoat and hull perfect. |

Car paint seems to be a bit less scuff and scratch resistant than 2 Pot International, but is also a fair bit cheaper.
I've always found that a roller finish with International top coat is very textured unless you have a mate following you with a clean brush to smooth it out. The undercoat strangely seems less of an issue in that regard. |

I managed to spray my national 12 recently using standard 2 pack car body paint and the finish came out at a very high quality, we used an air compressor with spray gun attachment and bought the paint direct from supplier - motofax in kings langley.
I have seen boats sprayed in a car body shop - a 420, and previuosly my very own national 12, and the results were very good, however the guy who did the work was a sailor himself, i wouldnt trust any old car body shop to do the work for me. When I did the 12, i never bothered to epoxy the hull, it was a case of fair it, apply a primer (which can also be sprayed) and then the a 2 pack paint on top. To finish used (or going to use, havent done it yet, just waiting for the top coat to dry) a lacquer, also from motofax. Hope that helps, wont pretend to be an expert but this is what has worked for me!! Good luck |

I find Harris varnish minirollers leave a better finish than any others I've tried. |

Thanks for your responces. Is the consensus to roll the varnish on and then get a body shop to spray the bottom of the hull then? Dave - does that mean you have a car body shop you can recommend - i would definatly be more comfortable if it was a sailor doing the work.
