A friend with an old fireball is annoyed that to adjust pole height he has to adjust 2 ropes (the pole uphaul and pole downhaul). Can anyone explain some kind of 'one string' pole height system that when pulled it pulls the pole uphaul and releases the pole downhaul and when released it pulls the pole downhaul and releases the pole uphaul.

A solution is to have the pole downhaul loose enough that it is taut when the pole is in its highest position but this means that the pole can fly up when the pole is set lower. I am sure other symetrical classes have similar problems.

Thanks

you can set up an elastic downhall system, but it depends on the type of class as to the system.  It might be worth him posting on the fireball forum to see hwat other sailors are currently using.

A bit of elastic:-

The last part refers to the downhaul.

As Merlin says, putting in a bungee system on the downhaul is the easiest option. This also keeps the system neat when not in use as it is pulled tight and out of the way.

You can also put a cleat into the system so that it can be adjusted to take up the slack in the system for when you are on the extremes of up or down. When we used to fit out boats at Hartleys the very basic cruising boats had a plain bungee system, but anyone interested in racing seriously had the adjustment on the downhaul as well.

Yes as above, elastic is usually the best way, make sure it strong enough elastic to hold the pole down, but obviously not so strong that when you unclip the pole, when breeze, it pings back and hits you in the face!

I have a small scar about half an inch higher than my eyebrows and smack in the middle of my forehead.  The bleeding was impressive...
the same, but different...

He already has the elastic takeaway along with an adjustment to take up the slack in the downhaul, the problem is when he lowers the pole he also has to tighten the downhaul slack takeupper otherwise the pole shoots skyward. There must be a way that is similar to the Merlin one string raking system that eases one rope when you pull another?

All the new winder fireballs just have a rope down from the pole to a turning block on the floor it goes through the block and then has a knot at the maximum height the pole will ever need to lift. Its then dead ended onto about a meter run of elastic.

It doesn't need anything else as the sheets and twinning lines help stop the pole lifting and the pole is normally set pretty high in the fireball.

Thats how mine is set up and i've never had an issue with it. Hope that helps.

It sounds like the elastic being used may well be too thin, or has become pre-stretched. From experience, when setting it up you need to be using a 6mm elastic, and you will struggle to get the knot into it as it will be fighting you! As Stu says, a lot of the control also comes from the sheets and twinners so the pole shouldn't really be skying unless it is seriously windy.

I think replacing and thickening the elastic would just make it harder for the crew to get the pole onto the mast so I dont think that is a good solution.

Thanks, I will tell him to just put up and shut up moaning.
