I've tried to do a small repair with epoxy and carbon tape, unfortunately it got rained on before it set and won't go off. I've taken the tape off and cleaned off as much epoxy as I can in order to start again, but I'm left with a sticky residue that won't dry but also won't come off. Is there anything I can use to clean it off (white spirit?) that won't then stop the new epoxy from sticking, or would I be OK to just put the new epoxy and tape over the sticky stuff and assume it will bond? |

get some acetone if you can, and use this to carefully clean it off. You want to remove that uncured stuff, otherwise it will fail.

you need some epoxy thinners. that will get it off in a
jiffy. http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/store/durabuild- thinners-p-1212.html That stuff ^^. Its expensive so try and find someone who has some you can use before you contemplate buying it. |

Or, as I suggested, acetone
Really. That, and Methyl Ethyl Ketone (which is in that thinner, but is harder to get hold of on its own) are the main things we use for cleaning the resin mixers at work. |

At Hartleys we used to use Acetone for pretty much everything. I agree with Al!

Thanks guys, I'll give the acetone a go I've just found this - same make as the epoxy I'm using so should work (I hope!) http://www.sailboats.co.uk/Catalogue~Blue_Gee_Acetone_Solven t_250ml~p_BG27003~c5193.html Edited by Jamie600 |

Small bottles of Acetone can be found in your local chemist.

Tescos may add nail conditioners/skin softener too though, so watch out! Doesn't seem to matter for cleaning glue off sails though.
