Do these need any kind of special care or treatment? We've been advised to give the mast a quick fine sand down & a coating of varnish. I've never seen or heard of this one but thought i'd ask in case there's somethings i need to be aware of with looking after this one.

You need to stop UV light degrading the resin. Varnishh is suppose to work, but personlly I trust light coloured paint better because you can see if it rubs off.

Every 2-3 years you should re-do the varnish. If the varnish is going dull and the finish is more matt than gloss that's the key sign..... Ian |

...and buy a bag for it if you aren't going to re-varnish/paint it regularly, especially if the mast is going to be 'non-vertical' (in trailing mode) for any length of time. The 'experts' reckon that a carbon mast suffers considerably more UV damage when horizontal than when vertical in the boat. (Thinks to self..."are these experts also retailers of mast bags?") |

I used the Perfection 2 pack varnish as I was recomended this by the 300 class. Some guys swear by it saying they only need to do their mast once every five years. Others are not so bought on it. At any rate it is expensive around £35 a can. Some people painted their masts, other used a sprey from Halfords with UVA and UVB blockers in it. (I used to). If you varnish used a ver small amount and try to avoid runs and getting air in the varnish when you mix it together. I put four coats on my mast. Turned it from grey to jet black and looked like the dogs do-das. |

Think about sun exposure per unit area when mast is vertical and horizontal. In fact exactly the same principle as why the equator is hotter than the poles. very rough sorry!
