Ok, well i am no new sailor, so dont fear to go sailing technical with me.

I am looking to get an asymmetric crew able (1-3) person boat.
i have so far looked at the RS 200, the RS 400 and the Laser 2000.

my problem is this, i want a boat that is not too powerful (family friendly I
guess) but can still be good fun in a decent amount of wind. i personally am
quite experienced in sailing asymmetric boats however i am looking for a
boat that would be good for others in my family who are often a little lighter
and less experienced.

which boat has the right balance of power / fun / price of the three?

I would vote laser 2000 for family friendly and still
exciting enough when the wind perks up

out of the choices, has to be the 2000, but have you considered a comet trio? proper boat to sit in with a good size assy for learning, and give it enough wind, anything can be fun.

Enterprise 22619 - to be renamed "Krossbow"
Nationa 12 2947 - "Gordon"

NS14 - no kite, but somewhere between RS200 and 400 performance wise, and much the smallest (easiest to handle) sails of all the boats mentioned.  Best of the bunch by far to sail on your own, and much the best boat in terms of how good it is to sail. Don't let the lack of kite put you off, it is much quicker than a 200 on a reach.

I have both a 400 and a Laser2000.

The 2000 lives on its trailer, goes around all the Open Meetings, and gets sailed on the sea / estuaries (average wind strength 3 to 5).

The 400 lives at the club (Burghfield, next to Reading - inland lake), gets raced against other 400's at the club, and is used in average wind strengths of 1 to 4.

Both are fun and exciting.

If you have a less experienced crew, then the 2000 is great: and if you want more excitement then get along to an Open Meeting with 30-40 boats, or race in a force 6.

The 400 would be getting to be too much of a handfull for me and my crew in a force 5 to 6: but does have the power in a force 1 to give more fun than the 2000.

Was it your 400's kite that was blocking all my wind on the Blaze open the other day

A well I passed a few on the reaches (smug face)

I think the 2000 gives the widest usage out of the list

go for the 400 you will never get bored, or fat! the 2000 is a dinghy to retire too ( just before you buy a wayfarer)
