Matt, if you mean take the hook part and fit it to a conventional velcro strap then yes I have tried that. Advantages: quicker to rig, Velcro doesn't wear. Disadvantage: not quite so tight on the boom (so?) I also improved the slide performance of the Harken metal sleeve thingy by illegally sticking a layer of Hmdpe 'Anti-wear' tape around the inside of the sleeve. Works much better but grit would still be a problem. |

Apologies for raising this thread from the dead, but if anyone has one of these sleeves that they don't want, then I'd be interested in purchasing! (Don't want the hook or block, just the sleeve)

The pic of goody is in china isnt it? I know that because hes using the Southern Ropes yellow mainsheet which is the same as the new red XD one but lighter. The boom sleeves were class legal long before that! They just arent very good... I find the rooster clew strap better than the laser velcro one. Another tip is to get rid of those rubbish harken twisted hooks, they come undone so often! The old holt ones were much better! Better still get a closed hook or tie the block straight to the sail, then to come into a lee shore just untie the meansheet from the end of the boom and drift in.

As you can see a split opinion. Having seen that state of some peoples booms who use them (anodising scraped off in a very short time period) I will stick with my velcro strap. Works very well, slides easily and has never cause me an issue aisde from when one of them ripped in 2 during a training session. Iit was blow dogs off chains though and the strap was in need of replacement (one those, oh I will do it next time jobs). Gave me a nice swim anyway.... Oh and the pic of Goody was taken before the boom sleeves were class legal I believe... Those who advocate PTFE spray (or something similar) also note this is not class legal either but there is a rule change going through to allow it. |

whatever happened to the untie the knot in the end of the mainsheet (outboard end of the boom) technique we all used to use when lee shore landing, rather than trying to undo the clew of the sail |

I think aside from them being equally as close to the boom, thus tightening the leech (higher pointing), the extra benefit you get from being able to land on a lee jetty or lee shore with it, is great, I am definetly going to buy one.

I love my Harken boom sleeve. No more velcro coming undone at awkward moments, easy to undo when landing (especailly on a lee shore or in a blow), it's attached to the boom so doesn't get lost. I agree that the occasional silicone spray is required. I wouldn't like to go back to velcro now.

Yes but think how much better he would have done if he
had some sort of Harken boom sleeve to attach that Union Jack to his hand. Rather than using the old fashioned "fingers gripping" technique. (not that much better, obviously) |
