am ex laser sailor and sail at very small inland club. we sail mostly pursuit races and i am looking for a singlehander that will go well to its yardstick in light winds.
am thinking of a lightning 368. would like peoples views on the boat and what its like to sail. Edited by ex laser |

Or a Comet, or Phantom. Not come across the lightning 368 much. A Comet is a real rocket ship when it is drifiting conditions, the British Moth is too but takes a bit more work to keep it going. I have also found that an 8.1 goes very well in light and shifty winds. I manage to keep up with the Phantoms and many other faster boats. To get recommendations we really need to know a bit more about where you sail and how heavy you are. |

I think it depends a lot on your height, weight and the puddle.
I've never sailed a Phantom, but have raced both the Comet and Lightning on occasions instead of my own British Moth. The Lightning is great on open water and appears to perform well to its handicap without needing a gorilla at the helm. However, in light conditions it tends to stick. On sheltered waters you need a lot of luck to have any success. The Comet - personally I hate it! Although if you're light and less than five and a half feet, it would probably be a better choice for you than the British Moth. If you're between 5'5" and 6' and around 10.5 to 11.5 stone, get British Moth. In sheltered conditions it's nigh on unbeatable (in the right hands). I'd have to agree, it's not a boat many people can jump in and master. Its stubby little hull with the insanely tall rig make for some eccentric behaviour, but if your puddle's surrounded by trees and vegetation, the comets, lightnings and lasers will be forever admiring our transom! I'd recommend you make contact with some Moth sailors near to where you are and see if you can blag a go. Check out our association website www.britishmoth.co.uk for contacts. And if you're a bigger chap, take a look at the Supanova. Works better in sheltered conditions than either the Lightning or the Phantom. |

Don't forget the Streaker!
Can't say I really know anything about the lightening. Streaker does well for its handicap I think......I hope ![]() |

The Lightning appeared to go OK when racing against them at Bristol Avon on the river, but I'd have to agree that for the really sheltered stuff the British Moth is great. I've also owned a Comet, which looses out to the Moth due to its lack of sail high up, but does have a great light wind hull shape. The Streaker seems to be a good allrounder, with maybe not enough sail to take on the Moth in the really fluky stuff, but with a greater range of conditions to do well in. All good alternatives to the Laser for sheltered waters - try them all and go with the one that you enjoy sailing most.

An OK is a great choice. At your weight you will need a bendy rig so you can depower easily. It performs well to its handicap, so no problems there. I always do quite well in the light stuff, as I am sitting comfortably and the laser sailors are cuddling their dagger boards!
