I am a very light 13 year old (40 kg to be exact) and am not sure what boat to buy.
I live in germany and we dont have very many classes over here so I was wondering if i Should get an English class or a not very good german class. (by the way optimist is not a choice) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The Topper. Fantastic class, right weight range and loads available over here. If there aren't any in German, a quick trip over on the tunnel, throw it on a car roof and drive back. The Laser 4.7 would be a handful. Another boat could be a Laser Pico, but I think you'd have more fun in a Topper. |

You may not find that the English boats are that well suited to your sailing conditions anyway... If you were in Britain I'd recommend a Topper, but you really don't want to be the only person in your area with one. Apart from anything else you'll probably onmly want to keep a boat a couple of years, and if you get some obscure english class the chances of selling it are low...
If you're in Northern Germany I think I saw an press release saying the Danes are buying lots of RS Fevas, which are nice two handers for your sort of agegroup, so there would be a market for them over the border at least. They're also getting the RS Tera singlhander, which looks a bit less of a packing case than the Optimist, but I don't know a lot about them. Other than that diffcult to say: there's the nasty Laser 4.7, which is a big lump to pull around the dinghy park if you're 40kg... |

ive sailed toppers in england and they were pretty fun but where i live there is almost no wind and so i want a good boat that goes like a rocket in low wind.

yh the best boat for a 13 year old like yourself is either a laser pico, topper depends on how much sailing experience you've had laser for the more experienced. callum |

sorry, but it has to be an optimist. best boat fro your age and weight, can learn a hell of a lot sailing them and they're a very close and tactical class to race

Best bet for you is the 'Splash' or Optimist.
link to splash uk website link to worldwide website link to splash global distributors list link to German splash association far superior to toppers, pico's etc ![]() ![]() Splash is built in Holland and is a very very big class in Europe. Optimist... well it's huge everywhere. link to Optimist global website Edited by Jack Sparrow |

aha but from a 14 year old like myself i have sailed optimists but they are jus to small even for myself, topper is easier to rigg, and the topper are easier to tack and gybe trust me if your lucking for a first boat topper much better than an optimist and cheaper, you can pick a second hand one for about £350, my friend is selling one race spec to.
