What do you think about the new Volvo 70 (WOW).
How many records do you think they will break?

The new Volvo Open 70 makes it’s debut in the 2005-06 Volvo Ocean Race, and at present, you can find her only in drawings and computer-generated images. Killian Bushe is currently building the first boat in Holland for ABN AMRO, which will be launched at the end of the year.

Just by studying the measurements of the Volvo 70, you will see that this is going to be one impressive beast. She measures 36 metres from the bulb to the top of her mast. That is equivalent to an 11 or 12 floor apartment building. The bulb weight 4,500 kilos – is the same as three Volvo estate cars. The rest of her is quite trim. Her total weight is 12,500 kilos – eight per cent less than the 10-foot shorter V.O.60 (the boat used in the last three races).

The Volvo Open 70 will be able to set up to 775 square metres at a time – equivalent to 11 apartments or three tennis courts.

An articulated city-bus with room for up to 130 passengers is 18 metres long. The Volvo Open 70 is 21.5m. And she is so wide (up to 5.7 metres) that you can put the large Volvo XC90 across her deck and still be able to walk by.

To say that a sailing boat is driven solely by air is not the full truth. You need to add water and food for the crew. They consume a lot. The average male, living a normal life, requires approximately 3,000 calories (Kcal) per day and about 2.5 litres of water. A Volvo Open 70 crewmember requires twice as much: 6,000 kcal and 5 litres of water (7.5 litres a day in the heat, close to the equator). During a long leg of the race, at least 1,000 litres of water is required – just for drinking.

Poor nutrient equals low human performance, which equals low sailing speeds. It is just like a car – no fuel, no speed. Although the amount of fuel needed for a racing boat is significantly lower than for a car, kcal consumed by the crew – approximately 54,000/day – and distance travelled –say 400 nautical miles/day – would, in car terms, be equivalent to a fuel consumption of 0.91 litres/100m.

Petrol contains a lot of energy. If nine men consume 6,000 kcal per day in 20 days, 135 litres of petrol would be enough to cover their total need of energy. If the human body could have been fuelled by petrol instead of freeze dried food, 15 litres (or 0.75 litre/day) would have been enough to keep each crew member running for 20 days of racing in the Southern Ocean….

We asked British yacht designer, Simon Rogers at Rogers Yacht Design, to calculate how much power a boat like this can pull out of fresh air.

“Say that you have 20 knots downwind. The boat will then travel at approximately the same speed. The power you need to achieve that is approximately 270 horsepower,” Simon said. “In more extreme weather, above 30 knots, it would be possible to make the Volvo Open 70 generate forces equivalent to 400 horsepower. I would not be surprised if the speed under such conditions momentarily can exceed 35 knots.”

These maximum speeds are reached when the boat can use power from both wind and waves. If only wind was to be used (flat water is rare in stormy weather, but it occurs sometimes), a rough estimate is that the boat could reach speeds of more than 25 knots.

That means that if this boat came up alongside a merchant vessel in a storm, it is possible that the race boat would travel significantly faster. As we said intitially, this boat loves stormy weather.

I'm really looking forward to this race.  Last time you could log on to their website and race your virtual boat against theirs.  To be successful you had to interpret the weather and make adjustments to the course and rig.  It was very challenging and several of my friends took part and there were hundreds of others.  Downloading and processing the weather information took quite sometime and prompted a new, faster computer for me and now this time I also have broadband.  I can't wait.

In addition there were some great photos of 60 foot boats surfing which became my PCs wallpaper for some time.

In fact the current Vendee Globe and the Ellen B&Q thing aren't half as exciting since they don't provide this feature on their website.

None for the number of boats coming to the startline, that's for sure. The budget for a VO campaign appears to be around 4 times that for Vendee or Ellen's big adventure. No way are they getting 4 times the exposure for their sponsors. It's wouldn't surprise me if this were the last VO race. I say that with regret, as I've been following the VO/Whitbread for 20+ years now.

Inshore racing will give the inshore sailors on the teams an opportunity to prevail in their speciality, close to the shore where spectators can get caught up in the drama. The media will be able to package great races and the syndicates and sponsors will be able to programme their entertainment and hospitality activity around these showcase events.

Key Facts

• Television coverage producing a cumulative audience of over 800 million viewers
• Print media coverage of over 15,000 published articles in 11 territories, creating in excess of 686 million unique readers. 77 per cent accounted for in Germany, Sweden, UK, USA and France.
• Over three million unique visitors to the official website
• More than a billion listeners to radio race coverage
• 200% - 300% return on investment on media exposure alone for syndicates
• High socio-economic grouping with 37% of those aware of the race categorised as ABC1
• Awareness of competing teams increased by up to 30%
• Proven track record as a business to business and internal engagement tool

What the race offers

• Extensive global media coverage
• Enhanced definition, differentiation and exposure for a brand
• Global sales opportunities
• Premium and ‘money can’t buy’ business to business opportunities
• Customer relationship marketing
• Internal engagement programmes

Investing in the race

• Team sponsor
• Race partner
• Race sponsor
• Race supplier

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the most exciting and effective sports marketing opportunities available anywhere in the world. The event offers unique opportunities as a platform for delivering on a wide range of strategic business objectives whilst making real and measurable impact on the bottom line.

With a media strategy focused at the non-sailing audience and significant changes to the race format, the offering from the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 will be stronger than ever before.

Am shure the sponsers will get there moneys worth

So the press release says the sponsors will get good value and it must be true because they say so? That's your argument?

I run a small company and get several calls a week from advertising space salesman who all tell me I will be rich if only I advertise with them. It's the same thing and it's just hype.

What actually really annoys me about the move to the VO70 is that it makes it completely impossible for a "budget entry" (a few million dollars - on the level of the Vendee). They have slammed the door on any new entrants to the event, like Matt Humphries a few years ago.

Cost escalation kills events and classes. Where are the Formula 40s, IOR 50s, Ultimate 30s? We never seem to learn.

yeah i find when the budgets goes up, less people are able to compete as they just dont have the advanced technology to match that of the others.  it will be a real shame is this is the last,  and i have been on a website and the drawings of her look amazing!!  and that internet can u beat her course thing sounds great fun,  definatley gonna give that a go this year

With extreme difficulty. I believe ABN Amro are doing crew trials - google around. But really if you don't have experience of this kind of sailing, forget it.

I will make a positive suggestion though. If you are interested in trying ocean racing, register yourself on the RORC crew list. If you have a reasonable dinghy racing CV you are quite likely to get a few phone calls.
