I think also more people advertise they're boats in the spring rather than the winter.

Where have all the second hand boats gone. Is a very good question? The laser 1 were everywhere 10 years ago. The sailing clubs have got less laser 1 now than in the eighties. In 1982 the numbers were 85000, now 185000. The lasers fleet has dropped at Draycote, poor turnout at Carsington and Chase, Grafham are down from years ago, also Staunton Harold is down, they would get 20 boats racing every week with 100+ boats at the club at SH. With the drop in numbers at the clubs and the new boats sold, where have the lasers gone, as a ten year old boat goes as fast as a new one?Edited by Wrighty |

There's a couple of reasons. First mid-winter is not prime boat buying/selling time. Second the internet now gives more choice where to advertise. Y&Y are the only people who think they can charge for the privilege. The lack of people advertising with them suggests they are wrong...

Most sailing clubs dinghy parks seem to be home to a long line of upturned abandoned lasers. I would have thought that there would be a big market for other class sailors having a 'cheap' laser available, but most clubs seem reluctant to sell them fearing possible legal chalanges.

I think class assocation sites are worth a look ... I guess it's an intenet impact; Y&Y mag used to be packed with 2nd hand boats; it was THE place to buy & sell but that was all before the internet. That said there seems to be a shortage of Lasers; when we were looking for an old one we found it hard to find one; now we have a "spare" one we have decided to keep it as they hold their price so well that we can keep it as perhaps I will use it a bit ... |

2 thing IMO (having just purchased a boat)
1) It is the wrong time of year to sell really, end of the season is better or spring when people are upgrading (just after the dinghy show tends to be a hot spot). 2) Impactof free sites. I used the CA site when I sold my Blaze and have used other free sites in the past. just my 2p, Paul |

But with the Blaze you only have to whisper the idea and it will sell ! Desperate shortage at any time of year ..... so when will you get another one ? ...I suppose after it next blows and you try to get your current choice upwind ;-) ..... Mike L. But of course the web has changed everything as well ..... The CA's have the power today - and quite right too .... |
