sailing today in an laser open i was approaching a boat on starboard upwind. i decided to go astern of the boat on starboard and called him to hold his course.as i bore off behind him he decided to tack, there was no collision and he did keep clear of me but is he allowed to do this or is he tacking in my water.

Always tricky! I was just clearing / almost clearing someone while on port. He shouted "hold your course" and bore away just a fraction. BUT hiding on the other side of him was another boat that I couldn't clear, so I had to tack between the 2 boats - and probably completely upset the "kind" person who had let me go. Even if you have said "hold your course", you still have right of way. So he has to keep clear both while sailing and while tacking. |

16.2 In addition, when after the starting signal a port-tack boat is keeping clear by sailing to pass astern of a starboard-tack boat, the starboard-tack boat shall not change course if as a result the port-tack boat would immediately need to change course to continue keeping clear. It doesn't sound from your description as if you did need to immediately change course following his tack. Therefore he was within his rights to tack. |

It's good tactics to tack on a port boat that has just ducked you. You put yourself on port but, assuming that you dont' lose too much ground in the tack, you are now slightly to windward and only just behind. The leeward boat (you) is then pinned, having insufficient space to tack onto starboard until the windward boat (him) does so.

The thing to do is to duck as close as you can with as much speed as you can carry, and then come up as hard as you can as they tack, as you will be going faster you can normally point higher for that critical time as they assume a close hauled course, and may even have luffing rights (contentious). You normally go straight past the tacking boat. If he has space he will stay ahead, so tack out before you are trapped.
