Hi,
I am interested in getting into dinghy sailing but I have no idea which class to go for, there seem to be many! I have a lot of experience on yachts (over 10,000 miles) and will mostly be sailing the dinghy single handed. I weigh 93kg and am 6' 3". I have no dinghy experience as yet. I have been looking at Finn, Solo, Phantom but am not sure which to go for, or even if some other class is better. I am not too concerned about having a class race nearby as I am happy to enter handicap races. Any advice please? |

After reading a few posts here, I would also be up for a Cat...
Anyone know anything about the shadow class ? |

That 8.1 looks ok.
Now this is a silly question I know, bu as I said, I have never sailed dinghies. This hiking business..... That photo on the link looks mighty uncumfortable! Is this required for ALL dinghy classes ? |

Thanks Mike. In terms of relative cost, are phantom generally better priced than Finn? (if you know) |

hiking is used on the most of the dinghy classes, there are also trapeze boats where you stand on the side to keep the boat flat but thats a whole different kind of dinghy sailing i think I think the phantom would be the best class for you |

Ok, I guess I just have to get used to that.... hope the old back doesn't give !! ![]() Another vote for the phantom.. thanks. Any particular reason the phantom? I thought from my reading the finn would be recommended most. |

JDR,
You might want to consider a Blaze as well as a Phantom, much less of a handful and you can get a competitve Blaze for around £1500 whereas a competitive Phantom is more likely to be around £3k and then you have the joys of insuring a boat with a carbon mast (unless you opt for a tin rig). The Blaze carries weight well, is comfy when hiking due to the rack that you sit out on. I used to sail a Laser and always felt awful the next day with sore legs and lower back, since I got the Blaze no more of that (and it does cream the Phantoms on a reach ![]() Just my personal view of course... Aside from cost though there is little to choose between them. You might also want to consider an OK. Paul |

Try an RS300 if you can get hold of one. That'll easily carry your weight. Also a comfortable boat to hike from. Check out RS300.com. Best bet is to arrange a few test sails in each of the classes that interest you.
