I'll agree that classic racing is not extinct and still around, but is completely overwhelmed by modern yacht racing. Admitadly modern yacht racing is faster for the size of boat, but for sheer style a seventy foot schooner would completely outclass a V70. Where I live in Falmouth, classic boats are a key part of the yachting scene, being the last traditional oyster fishery in europe and with a large racing fleet of solent sunbeams and falmouth working boats racing in the summer. Classic racing seems to be more restrained to a local and occasionaly national level, and I can't think of any genuinely well recognised and noticed international classic racing. I think that classic racing should be brought back into the limelight and become what it once was again. I'm sure many may disagree with me but to watch classic yachts race is like stepping back in time and the excitement that is captured in everyone who takes part or even just watches is brilliant.

There are classics regattas held in the Baltic, which I'd love to get to one day. They sail the square meter classes and many others. It is a shame that the sailing scene in the UK is geared mainly towards modern plastic yachts. The dinghy sailing scene is similar, generally - faster is considered better, and bug*er the style.

Exactly, and the thing that annoys me is that even if you love sailing classics more than modern boats but want to go anywhere in the racing scene, you HAVE to go modern.

as you openely admit mr dart yur a fart . where's you bin ? asking "bring back classic racing " just about every yat club has its own dinosaur relic class racing , leaking like sieves (tho prob epoxy coated and splined now) What about , windemere classics , fowey workboats , J classes still race , falmouth bay winklepicking brigs , swallows , x boats , loch longs , sunbeams , 6 metres , 12 metres ,8 metres . Dragons , fife yachts , thames A raters , Norfolk punts , shrimpers, crabbers , pimpers ......................far canal ! I could go on for ever . some of the most prestigeous yat racing is done in classics , check oot "La Nioularge"
your looking in the wrong place if you can't find any "classic " racin
even the Tornadoes have a classic now !!!! |

Ok fine ill agree there , and my name was made in an act of desperation! Anyway im not saying there is no classic racing around anymore ill agree there are still classic races occuring all over the place and yes go to any yacht club anywhere they will have a classic. But what im trying to say here is that there is just not as much recognition as there should be for classics and the people who sail them. They just aren't put up on a s higher a level as I think they deserve.

The funny thing is that so many people are running around like headless chooks, squawking "sailing is going towards sportsboats and skiffs, sailing is going towards sportsboats and skiffs" when those classes are normally small, and the classic or slow boat fleets are often strong AND growing.
Dragons must be THE recognised classic; becoming a Dragon world champ has a lot of cred, doesn't it? |

When was racing for "classic" boats ever stronger or more popular than it is now? If we just consider the Js and big boats, when I started sailing thirty years ago they were all laid up as houseboats and if you had predicted that there would be J class racing again everyone would have fallen about laughing...

Also the ton-cup revivals. There is big interest in the Merlins in vintage boats. Same true in other development classes? There are a fair number of people who want something more individual than the latest plastic fantastic.
