Help! Yesterday whilst enjoying the strong wind I suffered some damage to my boat. The shroud plate that is mounted through the deck and onto the side of the hull was over pressured and has shifted slightly by 1MM The shroud had not plate screwd to the deck to spread the load which is one thing i am going to sort. But the usual plate will not fit as the lower is fitted just in front of the shoud mounting point. Suggestions welcomed! |

From what you say it seems that you need to reinforce the hull where the plate is mounted (screwed on?). and while you are about it, you might do the same on the other side.

put a block of marine ply underneath for the screws to go into and spread the load.

You definitely need to spread the load. The question is can you do some GRP (glass reinforced plastic) work? In not, you might get someone who knows or you may treat this as a learning experience. The way to spread the load is to make a gradual build up from around the damage to the 'middle'. If this sounds Greek to you feel free to ask again or even email me for more details. In either case it would be useful if you can say how much you know about it. It would help if you give me some numbers too. Like, the thickness of the hull and the extent of the damage.

The Hull thickness is hard to gauge without drilling a hole in it? The hull is a Rondar (Paul Young) composite Phantom. I have varnished and made minor epoxy repairs to my previous phantom but they were wood a medium I am happy to work with! My previous plastic phantom never broke so I have no expeience in mending it. My plan is to make the shrouds bullet proof as they are the weak link. The remainder of the hull has (via the previous owner) been totally re engineered to better than new. I am just a bit p'd off that he did not do the same job on the shrouds. The centre board case has been reinforsed using compressed woven strand the tanks have been seperated and refixed to ensure they are water tight an to retain rigidity. the whole boat bar the shrouds has been given a major going over. Shaping and fitting a piece of wood to the interior of the tank and then bolting through sounds doable! The local Chandlery want £33 per hour so I am hoping to sort this myself
