silly question did you use epoxy or polyester resin for the choppy as epoxy resin wont breakdown the binder and you may have built in a weak point in the structure

Good work. Now time for avacado and a bottle of wine! Maybe book some theatre tickets too.

Strong carboard box used to make up template. Plastic sheet taped over it so resin wouldn't stick.

2 layers 170 gsm carbon laid up at 45 degrees. Two layers of some CSM I had lyinging about and then 4 layers of carbon laid up with the weave running up/down. Used plastic sheet and block to squeeze out excess resin. Allowed to go off and then hacksaw used to cut off rough edges. Just need to grind chamfer on edges, drill holes and fit.

How did you decide to do it in the end?

Peel ply is near enough to the stuff they line suits/dresses with... layed over the laminate and then ripped off when cured will give you a much better finish and help with squeezing excess resin out giving you a lighter end product.

Peel ply is a sort off open weave nylon cloth, which doesn't stick to the laminate. It soaks up the excess resin and when everything is cured you peel it off, and are left with a even, if patterned finish, which is also suitable for gluing more epoxy on top of without further preparation.
