I agree, I've supported the RYA all my sailing career was a member for many years, all my kids went through the mill, but that was then, in the days of Edmund Whelan, committees running things with well known figures actually at the coal face, not the commercial behemoth with the jobsworths we have these days.

Just like road tax has benefited motorists, particularly motor cyclists - Not.

More pot holes now than ever.

Better Tax Cyclists, particularly Electric cycles on the road.

Anyway it's academic, it's what the RYA is for, in the stead of a Whitehall Department, what would you rather, the RYA or the Ministry of Marine Caft and Waterways?

My new N12 (2020) had to have a serial number engraved on the stern which details builder ID, unique number (not sail no) and  month & year of build. Perhaps it is the case for all new small boats, pretty sure the Laser / ILCA has the same on the stern.

Watched something on TV a couple of weeks ago about the thousand of abandoned boats all round the coast, boat registration could prevent this.

serious dinghy  racers  often SSR stuff  - presumably  for  such purposes 

also using stuff o nthe Baords or CRT (ex BWB )  canals  requires registration

Well, I suppose he could register it with the small ships register and get an SSR number. Costs £35 for 5 years. Seems like overkill though! But if he's giung to keep it there all year round he may have to do something like that. You could ask the RYA, they keep track of these sorts of issues for larger boats and may be able to help.
