How critical is the quality / finish of a daggerboard for boat speed - does it really make much difference if it's not lovely and smooth?

Big surface area, so yes. But it is a small part of the whole picture, so get it all right, and you notice the difference.
Also, headology shouldn't be underestimated. Nice kit makes you think your boat is fast, which in turn gives confidence which makes you sail fast. On the other hand, I sail knackered old boats and enjoy it, so what the hell! |

Bethwaite says as smooth as you can possibly get them.
Leading edge is the most important part

I'm a recently returnee dinghy sailor doing a bit of Sunday handicap racing, sailing an aged Europe with a daggerboard formed from a plank of ply. Not sure the term edge applies to either the leading or trailing end...somewhat blunt. I'll have to see about sorting it. I need all the speed I can get!

Ply daggerboards are problematic - shape them too much and they break, because most of the strength is in the outer layer of ply, and when you shape it you remove most of it. Sometimes the best thing to do is just to paint it and smooth it as well as you can. Its a depressing amount of work (or alternatively very depressing amount of cash) to make a better board.

This is centre board from my Sprint, ply with approx' 1/8" of Gel coat on the surface, finished with 2 pack white gloss, took about 6 months, you need to leave each coat as long as you can. This is a simple 'Spitfire' wing shaped board.

interesting that the pivot bolt (presumably) goes in to the groove rather than through the foil inside the case - any pics of that in the boat, I guess there must be some kind of mechanism that enables friction to keep the foil 'falling' or being pulled through?

Hi Getafix,
The pivot bolt is moulded into centre board case, you put slot over bolt and held in place with a 4" brass screw. Edited by 423zero - 10 Dec 19 at 8:01pm |

Thanks, refurbished foil looks great. Happy Minisprinting, can you help me remember the difference between the MS and the Toy?

Only seen a Toy once, that was a few years ago at Staunton Harold, a CVRDA event, more of a racing dinghy than Sprint, which is a beach boat really.
