As a class the B14 fleet has been exceptionally fortunate to have the sponsorship of Gul for many years. The sponsorship consisted of vouchers we could spend with Gul within a year of winning them. They were awarded to the top 3 usually and then another 4-6 vouchers to boats down the fleet. Race winners, endurance, first timers etc etc etc.... So lots of prizes, high value (£50/£25/£10) spread through the fleet

So the top 3 boats (helm and crew) are very often in the top slots very often so receive these prizes very often...

My question is (of those top sailors) is it right that the same sailors receive these decent prizes time and time again?
Would it be demotivating if the prizes were concentrated lower down in the fleet and the top 3 just received the usual club prizes? ie glasses etc
Would those top sailors move to another class?
Or is it the class itself that's the reason they sail it and the prizes don't matter. "Just winning is good enough for me"
Or do they??? (matter)?

At the Europe events I've been to the prizes are raffled so everyone gets a chance of something nice

I think that's a question that only your particular sailors can answer. Most classes don't have that level of goodies and seem to get on OK.

Its also a question for the organisations donating the prizes. Being sailing companies its more than possible that part of their motivation is a desire that the top of the fleet be seen to be using their products - a form of advertising.

Phantom nationals this year every competitor got a prize, t-sh*ts, gloves, water bottles, bags, buoyancy aides etc etc  thanks to very generous sponsors, including: Allen Brothers, , Morgan sails, North sails, Moatt sails, Dimension Polyant, Ovington Boats , Crewsaver, Southern Ropes, Selden Masts and Office Design Works, Vickys Embroidery services and Pinnel and Bax.  The biggest prizes of a new sail and  the cloth to have a sail built at your preferred sail maker, were awarded by the most deserving by the committee.  Lots of very happy competitors.

What has happened at previous phantom nats is the top ten get a token prize and the better stuff gets distributed through the lower parts of the fleet. Usually every 3rd or 5th place downwards and if you ain't at the price giving your prize gets handed to the next boat that hasn't got something already.

As you write rightly day blackie, the top boats normally get all the gear, which they already have anyway, sometimes through sponsorship, so it's good that the 'also rans' get something decent
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

In the N12 class the top sailors would get the prizes at the start of the season and as it progressed the GUL vouchers would go to “1/2/3 not to win a GUL Voucher yet”, whilst the top 1/2/3 got glassware etc. Worked very well alongside the non-T-Foil / Junior / Admirals Cup / Vintage / Merit prizes.

As a company we express a desire that our prizes go to selected crews so we have winner of the navigational prize....the youngest, the eldest combined, its good to support the fleets, and good to see prizes go to sailors that are competing / supporting classes.
Some of the classes pick, some raffle, sometimes the winner gets one prize and the rest go to 'handicap' or buddy sytems...
Cheers you

Rooster sponsored a class event at out club a couple of years ago and specified who should get (secret) spot prizes of donated kit: 5th, 10th, 15th etc.  None went to those on the podium.

As Gareth said earlier, in the Europe Class at the Nationals and the Inlands for the last 2 years I’ve managed to ensure that there is a prize for every competitor, ranging from significant discounts of brand new sails, heart-rate monitor watches, through water bottles and hats, and we’ve drawn these on a lottery basis. This has meant that even the newcomer to the class in the old, tired boat can have just as much chance of leaving with a Gucci prize as the hotshots at the front, who still have the glory of leaving with the perpetual trophies.

This of course is just one part of our strategy to grow the Class, that has been massively successful in the past couple of years, with Nationals attendance on 2019 up 450% from the previous, and the largest Class event in the UK since 1998 (apart from when the world were held here in the early 2000s, with over 150 boats....

It’s also helped us boost our diversity by apparently bucking the reported national trends in sailing, with 40% of competitors being female, 50% under the age of 40, weight range of 50-82 Kg and age range of 15-70something.

How important are prizes? I think the satisfaction of achieving a good finishing position is the greatest incentive and I wouldn't expect to receive anything outside the podium places. A mention in a Y&Y report is always nice! Recognition from my fellow competitors if I've done well. The prizes on offer aren't really what incentivises me to go to an event.
