Rows of telltails on a jib luff are also known as Gentry tufts. Invented by aeronautical engineer Arvel Gentry.

Try this.. Watch them then apply more kicker.. Then sheet out a bit

You can spend too much time vacillating about things like this , just because the tel tales are working doesn't mean you're sailing fast or pointing high enough imv.

Yep, they don't work on windsurfers. They DO work on boats, which is why guys like pro sailmakers use them.

I use the in line telltales for high and low mode upwind. I think a telltale about two thirds back on the main is useful to see if you're oversheeting offwind.

Thanks. That last video especially was very good.

The newer 200 sails being see through you can see a lot more of the slot and jib leech tell tale than before and I've found that very interesting. So we've gone an stuck one in a similar place on the 800.

I've always used the three sets on the jib to gauge twist, but it's interesting in that video that the middle set tells you about sag. Obvious in hindsight but not something I've thought of before.

I use the leech tell tales in the top corner a lot on the 200 and 800 up to max hike / flat wiring.

What's hard to tell in the 800 is sheeting on the main downwind as theirs so little load in the sheet. I've seen quite a few skiffs with lots of tell tales on the main and I wonder if that's related?

Also, quite a few have several sets in line on jib on the 49er and 18s / 14s too. How should these be used?

This is for an NS14, so I don't know how applicable it is to other classes, but I find the explanation very clear:

Enterprise 20361 (Eisvogel), Laser 102727 (Halcyon), Laser 121986

The main thing is not to place them close to a seam or they will get caught. Also spray the telltale and surrounding area with silicon spray to prevent them sticking when wet.

I stuck telltales all over my Laser sail to see what was going on.

What I discovered was so disconcerting that I quickly took them all off again!  Flow is reversed in the back quarter of the sail on the leeward side in sub 8 knots  Stern Smile

It also showed me what the furthest forward point you can stick them is.  My rule of thumb is as far forward as possible, but far back enough to avoid the turbulent flow caused by the mast.  I've got one that is right on the edge of disturbed area, so in some wind strengths it never flies and for when that's happening I've got one a little bit further back.

I also stick one in a similar position at the top of the rig for setting the kicker on reaches in up to overpowered conditions.    It lets you know if the top of the rig is too loose and you need to pull some kicker on.
