Noticing Peakys post about the OK racing scratch with the Laser and knowing the Solution can, what else have we in that arena?

Finn, aero 7 and 9, hadron h2, zero and maybe another common one can and do race scratch -ish at Itchenor. Each dog will have its day depending on conditions, course etc.
Whilst ability difference is a much bigger thing, Laser a bit too slow, solo far too slow to wor with these off scratch.

Solo could be in there. Quicker than a laser in the light, but struggles when it is fresh

Vareo? 1090? are we saying a boat 4.20+ long with the same size sail as a Solution and a kite is 3 pts slower?

Really on which Planet is this then?

No don't tell me, it's the Planet PYAGMoron..

You really can't make this stuff up can you?

Slower than a laser upwind and the kite is tiny. And I think with respect sailed by demographically not a great standard, ie would be a bandito in the right hands.
It should be quicker than it is upwind based on stats, it’s just poorly executed.
Kites Esp on slower boats ww/lw make surprisingly little difference on py, and on little ponds you spend more time hoisting and dropping than benefiting.
Rs 100 is what 1000pts? That’s a little bit lighter and has a slightly bigger spinnaker. But is better executed toward performance.

So what is it about the Vareo? Centreboard not big enough? Sail crap? Can't say it looked that bad when I looked at one not long ago, it smacks of the RS500 which was a bitch to make go but you did at least have the benefit of extra meat on the wire..

I'm sorry I just can't accept a 420 waterline length against say the Solutions 390 and with the powerhouse not too dissimilar then off wind you get to chuck up a kite. If I were a betting man I'd have to have a wager on that.

Last year I tried to organise a singlehanded event, but unfortunately it had to be cancelled due to strong winds. The idea was for three groupings:
Group 1: Aero 9, DZero, H2 and Finn
Group 2: Aero 7, Megabyte, Supernova, Solution, Laser and OK
Group 3: Streaker, Aero 5, Radial, Solo, Byte, Europe and Lightning 368.

I’m not sure they could fairly all race off scratch, but in an hours race the PY suggests all boats in a group would finish within 2 mins of each other, which is far less than any skill spread.

Depending on fleet size...
When I was younger I used to race the radial against full rigs and at 1 sec per minute it was fine to race on scratch against the handful of full rigs we used to get out.  If there was a bigger fleet of lasers that I had to follow around it would have been a lot harder to stay in contact with the lead guys (clean air, blah blah blah) even if the skill level was the same.

So in your typical club race of half a dozen boats I'd be happy to race on scratch with a spread of 50 points or so.

If people aren't bothered about being able to battle for the win and just want to slot in to a race between first and last and have a race, then you could probably extend that range to 100 points.

Vareo. Similar vintage to the MX-Ray, single sail + asymmetric as well. MX initially got a 1020 which rapidly went to a Laser level. Awesome downwind, dog upwind so maybe similar in that way too? I now honestly think I could get a shortboard upwind quicker.
