Am starting to think about a move from the Midlands in the next few years and have always wanted to live around Falmouth (St Mawes and Roseland to be precise). For me location near to an active club with a strong handicap fleet would be a significant factor. So would love to hear your recommendations for active racing clubs on the South Coast that are West of Weymouth. Thanks!

Restronguet is the only serious dinghy club in the immediate area which is a fantastic area to sail in. And your "other boat" could be part of a Working Boat syndicate based at St. Mawes SC.... Come and give it a go in Falmouth Week this year.
Porthpean looks a nice small family club but access to it is difficult. Then you have Mounts Bay and Penzance further west but none of them have especially large handicap fleets and are more weather-dependant, being on open sea. I don't think there are handicap fleets in Fowey and Looe. |

Porthpean is a fantastic club - beautiful location and great sailing in St Austell Bay
Easterly wind can make launching tricky but other than that its brilliant Good dinghy racing Dinghy racing at Fowey is limited (unless you want a Troy keelboat or Fowet River dinghy) |

If you are talking about West of Weymouth, and not just the Falmouth area - though I'd prefer to race in Carrick Roads given the choice! - then there are a lot of other possibilities less far west. Exe SC gives you the option of sailing at sea or in the estuary according to conditions. Stacross has a good fleet, but is strictly estuary. But road, train and plane connections to the rest of the country are better from the Exe than the Fal, which may be a consideration!

If you are planning to live near St Mawes the only real options are Restroguet or Porthpean
Both are fantastic places to sail |

OP said west of Weymouth. Completely forgot to mention Lyme Regis - one of the best sea clubs around and great H'cap racing.

And you've got the inland waters of South West Lakes and of Wessex Water -
from Roadford to Sutton Bingham via Tamar, Wimbleball, Cheddar and Chew! Not coastal but definitely south west and easily accessible from the coastal areas. Edited by patj - 24 Apr 18 at 12:13pm |

We have good club racing at Salcombe; class racing for Solos and Salcombe Yawls; Fast, Medium and Junior Handicap fleets. There is a growing fleet of Phantoms within the Fast Handicap Fleet. Year around except for January and February. Plus Wednesday night racing, Cruiser Racing, two regattas, Merlin Week and quite a few open meetings.
