Only 2 days racing !

What a shame for the sailors - going to such an amazing venue and getting either too much or too little wind.

Not an easy place to get to and ferociously expensive when you are there.

I guess that's the problem with boats that have a narrower sailable wind range ?

Imagine if a full foiling boat/board were selected for the Olympics and that happened !

If you can afford a race spec. Moth you don’t worry about costs.

Shame the wind didn’t play ball but with global warming we can expect more freakish weather.

I've been to plenty of events where there has been no wind or too much the whole week. Certainly not just for foilers.

Yeah but the narrower the wind range of the boat the more chance of lost days. What is the realistic wind range of a current Int Moth, say compared to a Finn or a Laser?

strange sailing instructions.

19.3 SIX races are required to be completed to constitute a valid Championship

19.4 When fewer than 5 races have been completed, a boat’s score will be the total of her race scores.

so they scrapped in with 6 races but had the facility to only sail 5....

Yes - they managed to complete a two day worlds

That's not the point - going all that way for 2 days racing is the real shame

But it is the nature of the game, the only way to mitigate is to choose somewhere like Garda where tie wind is more predictable. We need wind to sail, but not too much or (in the case of foilers) too little.

Enterprises can have competitive racing in 3 or 4 knots, Moths less so.

Without  six it's still an open event, but no one gets 'World Champion' title. 19.4 is just about discard. It doesn't change the fact they needed six races to call it a championship.

Quite a few events have a discard coming in before the event qualifies as a champs, it's not really strange.

In my experience whilst other boats can sail outside the wind range of the moths, it rarely happens at championships.  The 200s have a lower limit of 4 knots, but I've never seen a race start in that and they're often abandoned if they drop to around that strength. Not because the boats aren't making way, but because the direction becomes unstable.

The moths are probably a little restricted in heavy weather though.

I've also been to Garda and struggled with no wind in thunderstorms, so no venue is impervious.

To be fair to the Moths, it's not usually wind strength but sea state that stops them. So an enclosed venue like Bermuda sound should be good for the class (ignoring the logistics of getting there).

'It's not normally like this' is a well worn cliche, but with all the AC met data, the Moth Class must have had a  good idea of what 'normal' was. From all reports it sounded like a freak week.

Rationally, I think it's just bad luck, rather than anything intrinsically wrong with foiling boats or a sign of global warming!

It is a shame though, as it seems Goodison's form was pretty much invincible and he would of like to prove it against an all star cast for his hat trick win. Sadly a side effect of ETNZ AC victory meant half the moth fleet were no longer living in Bermuda and many with jobs in the balance aren't going to spend thousands getting back there.
