Yep - at the very least on a National 12 and an International 14. You should know by now that there's nothing REALLY new out there! Dougal

I'm sure lots of boats have had it for their decks too if not for the hulls. Finns maybe.

There is nothing new under the sun, of that I am sure! Did it look ok or just a bit tatty?

Clearcoat carbon or carbon Kevlar can look alright if the builder is really painstaking about the layup. Clearcoat glass, when I've seen it, looked b****y awful. |

Clearcoat looks great for a few years. Long term outlook I believe is poor, especially as its difficult to repair invisibly

IIRC, used to be commonish in Finns for the deck. Something about clear being lighter white or coloured gel.

If you scroll down to pictures of Gruffalo (now my boat) you'll see the clear look.

Finessa of Sweden did a load of Europes in clear gelcoat hull and deck in the 1980s. Very much an acquired taste and they are looking a bit tired now. Rather "Mad Max" to my eyes; look like they're waiting to be painted!

There is a difference between clear gelcoat and clear coat (varnish) - good clear polyester gelcoat, ie applied into an female mould before the laminate should last a long time. I had it on punk boat before the glass and wood. Not perfect but that’s for non gelcoat reasons.
I’m with Jim not sure I like it on glass. And he also rightly points out that either gelcoat or varnish / lacquer show all the handiwork. Hardest is getting a nice finish on non moulded lacquered parts. |
