On the face of it I find it hard to see how a right-of-way boat can luff across the bow of a give-way boat (both on a run), with no collision, and then claim they altered course to avoid a collision. I would have thought that would be more likely to cause a collision than avoid one. The boats were 1m apart in 6 knots of breeze when the one on stbd. gybe luffed - 1m separation in 6 knots when both travelling in a similar direction doesn't seem like cause for concern. Clearly there is more to it than can be gleaned from that document but I'm having difficulting envisaging what that could be. I'm obviously not claiming that the outcome is wrong, just curious as to how it could have actually played out to result in that ruling. EDIT: Just read it again and I realise that what I read as 'STEM' is actually 'STERN', now it makes sense...
