We had better downwind vmg soaking it low with flattish boat than boats getting a hull out, when breeze increases it's more about getting weight right back off the corner so more about hanging off the back than the side. Or that's how it feels to me.

It's all to do with the drag curve for a given hull shape and the power available from the rig.
For any combination there is a sweet spot in terms of angle that gives best vmg.

On many catamarans due to the canoe body low drag with one hull immersed, the best angles are achieved when you can just keep the windward hull clear of the water. The actual angle at which best vmg is achieved is at a lower power angle than if you had both crew on the wire.
Certain classes (A-class) have now developed to a point where most new designs now operate at a better VMG with the helm on the wire rather than wild-thinging.

Angles too high? Wild thing quicker?
