Dr C. asked for a poll asking how old your boat is. Here is your place to put your boats age and if you want - talk about it!

Perhaps though how old is your boat is not quite accurate. My hull is about 5 years old, but the mast, sails, foils etc are all less than 6 months old. Maybe this is splitting hairs? But my boat wouldn't be quite so good if the rest of the components were the same age as the hull.... Does anybody else have any comments? |

I think we're talking originally built here aren't we, so I guess age of the hull is the issue. Think you'll find that most of us fat dads |

couldn't agree more Pierre, us Fat Dads , need to stick together, Fortunately the old boats to which you refer are still being built in modern materials and they are still fun, and still competitive, and they do as you say allow you remain seated at comfortable whilst enjoying the exhilaration.
Personally the thought of standing up for 90% of the time in the boat would not seem like fun to me.

Hi Pierre, I may be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but if you enjoy the more traditional high performance dinghy, may I suggest a vist to the Fastsail web site. This newly formed umbrella organisation is a coming together, by the class associations, of 7, single wired, two man ,SYMETRICALLY SPNINAKERED, performance craft. Namely, Ospreys, 5o5s, Javelins, Hornets, Flying Dutchmen, Fireballs and 470s.The nice thing is that if you are a member of your own class association( that is associated with Fastsail,) you are automatically a member of Fastsail. The classes have formed this organisation to primarily have a way to pool knowledge, enhance the classes Profiles, but most importantly HAVE FUN. If you went to the recent boat show at Ally Pally They had a fabulous stand, with some of the boats on display. The focal point of the year is the Symetric Grand Prix where all the classes come to gether and race against each other. All very determined, but in good spirit. I must say as a fireball sailor, it is quite daunting to see a Fly Dutchman bearing down on you.... and being on a start line with over 100 boats was a bit scary ... but great fun. Anyway why not Visit http://www.fastsail.org/ and get a real feel of whats going on. |

Hi Steve....... Great sales pitch old chap.... I actuallly sail an Osprey (GRP one) which I got in May last year. Am up on the FASTSAIL stuff. What a great idea that is. At the dinghy show I was cornered by a FD sailor to have a go in one of their boats. What an interesting bunch they are.... It was like being sold to by a cross between Christopher Lee and Pam Ayres.
Cheers Pierre |

We sail an old GK24 in club and national regattas. I think that there is so much fun to be had without having the latest kit. Added to this, we recently beat an X332 to win the regatta of wales in class 2! Proof indeed that there is life in the old boats yet!

I sail a Dart 18. I've no idea how old it is. It's a bit irrelevant anyway because over the years even the hulls have been replaced. It would be nice if somebody could give me a clue. It's a worlds model and the sail number is 6188.
