Congratulations to the RS300 class association - I think this is a great innovation.

Would be interested in comments from those who were there on what worked well in the format and not so well and if any refinements are suggested etc.

Chris,

We actually made amendments as the event progressed and we'll be requesting further feedback from all the competitors to feed into next year's event. Will let you know how it goes. In the meantime, others who were at the event may comment.

Couldn't make it last weekend but have been learning to sail a 300 for about 10 months now. What can I say? Beautiful, fast, challenging boat. Made so much better by a class with imagination, enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of humour. Top marks to Steve Bolland and all the guys involved. Beer

I like the:

- simple easily understood format/course (... that can just about cope with any wind changes during the race?)
- very clear head to head arrangement (and ability to see who is in front at any stage)
- short cycle times

I'm guessing the only slight drawback is:
- small number of competitors on the water at any one time and therefore other competitors hanging around

Presumably the course was very close to shore to enable people to watch...

We went through a number of iterations of the course as I tried them out in the run-up to the event. Originally it was going to be 2 rows of 8 buoys but that would have meant only 1 course so more downtime (+ the run-to-run gybes would have resulted in carnage in the 20 knots we had).

On the day we started with reach-to-reach gybes between the two lines of buoys downwind but that was also a bit much so we reverted to the course as described in the article for the afternoon races. I think we'll stick with this for future events.

Downtime is something we thought hard about, hence the two courses. We had 10 entrants so the maximum amount of races you might have been hanging around for was 2 races. We used a 60 sec/30 sec start countdown so 10 minutes max to wait for your next start. You need some downtime anyway as it is completely knackering! We had to delay the occasional start if someone was scheduled to sail 2 races in a row. I think we could could cope with up to 16-18 boats with 2 courses, more than that and you might need three.

Interesting you mention changes in wind. We turned off rule 42 for the event so that it could still have taken place had there been no wind.

To be honest, there were less teething issues than I had thought there might me. We'll need to think again about how to split the racing into gold and silver fleets for the later stages of racing. However, one unexpected consequence is that several club members who were watching really want to have a go so it looks like we'll be putting on a club slalom event to be raced in club Toppers some time over the summer.
