.... with the new "hyper-light" *ero classes, have the manufacturers had to tighten up tolerances in build weight? On most boats *cough-laser* a kilo here or there may have a performance effect, but would this be exaggerated in a super-light, where a kilo (for example) is a much greater percentage change?

I think the fact that every extra kilo of epoxy or carbon added is profit lost is going to be as strong a motivation as you need.

Expensive materials greatly increase the motivation to keep the usage down. Not like spraying chopped strand mat into a mould...

Jim, that might be true if the builder has anything to do with the profit margins (like the average one man band boat builder) but if the boat is being built on a Friday afternoon by an employee more interested in going out that night, then I can easily see that there could be variations in weight.

When I was building Cherubs, it was much cheaper to buy a few kilograms of lead from the scrapyard, than add weight with carbon and epoxy, and also it's much less labour intensive to bolt in a lump of lead than laminate a load of carbon.
