Have you noticed how many boats there are going to OK events now (40+ at the nationals etc). The class seems to be going from strength to strength.

The new boats look lovely and, like the Finn, just 'right'

Isn't it great to see that these traditional boats (OK, Finn, Solo etc) are still so popular. None of them are particularly fast and certainly don't do huge 'speed for effort' but, in addition to the great racing, they must all be lovely boats to sail ?

It'll be a boring rant.

OKs are excellent boats, but one I feel naturally lends itself to fleet racing, or at least racing against other OKs within handicap racing, rather than Billy-No-Matesing it against a mix of other single handers.

(edit: I appreciate there's no logic there btw...)

I can never understand why people find OK's visually attractive. They do nothing for me.

I had an old OK once.  I was trailling it somewhere, stopped at lights and the car behind braked so hard its bonnet dipped down so it came up under the OK and smashed its windscreen and bonnet to bits.  The ok was unscathed thought a little less snug on the trailer.

I never sailed it much.  It the time I was too light and found it really hard work.  I wouldn't mind one now to replace the classic solo for which I am too heavy.

I can only really think of 3 reasons why I'd buy an OK rather than an Aero, say, and I guess only 1 of them really applies to me. 1) I can pick one up 2nd hand for anything from free upwards. 2) I can go race all over Europe and take on some of the best sailors out there. 3) It is simply the boat which suits me best.

I've sailed them a very little, and while it was fun, no more so than many other boats, so 3 is out. I have no real wish to go off round the world, so 2 is out. That leaves me with 1, and one day I might turn a Lightning and a Minisail into one OK to do both jobs, but not for a few years yet, if ever.

My former helm and really good friend has just bought another OK.  For him it represented the best value vs. sailing.  HE wants to sail against the top helms in the country (Jim Hunt, Charlie Cumbley, Andy Couch all recently sailed one) and have a boat he can race week in week out at his sailing club.  He is a very, very good sailor and the boat works for him.  I loved my old OK, really great boat to sail at a time when i did not have a great deal of money.  I struggled to get it to perform to its PY against Solo's, but would suggest that was more down to me than the class itself.  Its a big class worldwide, but falls into the same catagory as boats like the Solo in the UK which is fairly crowded.  I am glad that numbers are swelling again over here.
