Watch our hero risk life and limb in the advancement of sailmankind, be in awe of the simple genius of the labour saving device, rush to your local sail store to order, be disappointed but accepting of the system as it is immediately banned, take solace that those who know best have preserved once again the status quo, continue to grin and bear hiking pain in the name of er what?

Why do we need the pain again?

Oh yes to ensure the young and fit professionals always beat and keep us in our place..

Enjoy, oh and eat it! You doubting thomases, humble pie, this is the taste.

The movie

Apparantly I can't view it without switching off safety mode, whatever that is!

I have to grant you, it is an interesting idea.

Still sceptical that it will be an improvement, but worth trying.

Why not simply have a couple of wires, each side of the hull. .... say attached to the mast.  No not quite a trapeze system and fastened much lower on the mast but that can engage with a board harness to supplement those stomach muscles when hiking ... seems simple - a 'trapeze' system for those who would rather hike, but with assistance of course  ;-)

Either that or you sail a 'decent' boat with decent leverage in the first place.  Yes - I'm bound to say "you really really do need wings" ..... everything else looks a bit like hard work.

I think you're missing the main point, connection to the boom increases 'feel'. I'm trying to emulate in these absurd sitting in pain things, the same sensation I get in proper sailing.

Trapezes don't give you that 'feel', the boom is everything, every nuance of power, pressure goes through it, having even a narrow 2 point attachment does increase sensitivity, as well as the spin off, of stress reduction, my problem in order for it to work as you can see from the vid, I need to sheet off the boom and I'm not that practised doing it so unsettled by it.

Sheeting off the centre has other problems also as you see it produces issues with the ropes getting crossed, but it gives me something to play about with.

Racks? The EPS has racks, much comfier racks than Blazes, all they needed was tilting so they go up as well as out, maybe one day I'll get round to it.

what happens then when you move around the boat if the wind is too light for hiking out? You'll need to be pretty smart on sheeting in, etc, cos everytime you move in the sail will go out. I presume if its that light you will clip it back to the hull?????

I agree with you about the racks, they should have pointed upwards a certain amount from the beginning.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Doesn't holding the mainsheet in your hand give you a connection to the boom?

The Blaze like most winged boats using tubes relies on YOU wearing decent hikers ... ones that do not have hard battens (those are designed for Lasers etc).   If those battens are replaced with decent 'memory type'  foam all is bliss beyond the most apparently 'butt' friendly gunwhales around

Most of us also add foam to the tubes anyway primarily to improve grip - what was on yours ?

PS - Were you still into those raw-hide 'chaps' of yours for sailing at the time ? ... er not recommended really  !
