Just bought myself a Gill longjohn and thermal spray top, but ended up getting really cold last weekend when it bucketed it down to herald the arrival of Bertha.

This may have been down to wearing a long sleeve rashie as a base layer rather than my hydraphobe top.  I did swap them over before putting the boat away, but by then my core temperature had dropped and I didn't warm up properly for hours.

Were my issues last weekend just down to poor base layer selection and should I just be warm enough with the kit I've got until it's drysuit weather?

I was thinking of getting a Gill Speedskin top as another layering option, but have ended up bucketed in sweat when trying one on (albeit in the comfort of a shop changing room) so not sure that's the right opttion.

Looking around the Rooster Thermaflex seems to offer something different and may prove to be a better option.

What are your experiences with the thermaflex?

If it's as good as SC says, why hasn't anybody copied it yet?

I've had the impression that it makes a big difference if I am wearing a long sleeved lycra top or a long sleeved polypro top. The latter feels quite a bit warmer.

So far I haven't had the need to switch to Thermaflex as a baselayer.

Not first hand yet. My son doesn't like the feel 'hot tops', as they make him sweaty/clammy, so is looking at a magic marine 'neo top' which has a lining which would make it more comfy against the skin.

Whilst we were looking through their range we saw lots of good stuff that we will consider when he grows out of his current kit.

Lycra doesn't really keep you warm, it aids in keeping cool really - even under a spray top when it (probably) holds moisture from sweat - if you haven't binned the boat a million times like I usually have  Big smile

I have a Gill long-john and find it very warm, but i will often team it up with a hydrophobic top rather than lycra if the weather is anything less than tropical.

I was an 'Aquafleece' sceptic for quite a long time until I got one from the Rooster sale online (£35.00) and was won over. Warm, light and dries really quickly.

I also have a Magic Marine long-john that is just superb - warm, great fit and really good quality but, again, I think the polypro / hydrophobic stuff is probably a good idea as base-layer.

Tried the Gill Speedskin on again today.  Struggling with the fit a bit.  Narrow shoulders / chest and middle age spread don't help.  Fits across the chest, but fa bit tighter than I might like lower down!  Magic Marine sizing may be better (at least on paper).  Is the Neo top really suitable for wearing under an Aquafleece style top though?

Isn't the phase 2 control top the equivalent of the Gill thermal spray top?  What I am after that is something suitable as a mid-layer between the hydraphobe and the thermal spray top.

At this time of year, I would always opt for the polypro top. They are really warm and wick moisture away from the skin. Also they are quite cheap. You should be plenty warm enough with a polypro base layer.

Remember that you can also get polypro pants that you can wear under your hikers. I am less enthusiastic about my Rooster hot top. It will keep you warm but it is rather uncomfortable. I only wear mine in the winter months.

I am still searching for the best way to keep my hands warm in the winter. Often I just don't wear gloves at all and my hands are fine because they stay much dryer in the air. Of course it doesn't work so well if there is a risk of capsizing!
