When you put a Laser type boat on the car roof, do you put the trolley on the roof and the boat on the trolley (right way up) or put the upturned boat on the roof with the trolley on top? Do you still need an undercover for a roof topped boat? The chance of stone chips must be small, but does grime stick?

Hi Peaky
recently collected laser for the club. I did boat deck down first, trolley on top spars strapped below roof rack.
The main reason is the other way up means removing the trolley wheels.
I know toppers are better upside down to avoid distorting the hulls.

I always found strapping the spars to the trolley meant your could lift the whole lot on top and then tie the trolley down using the gunnel support more than sturdy.

The disadvantage of passing spars under the roof rack is eventually you will take a huge lump out of the paint on your car roof!

I always put the boat deck down on the rack then strapped the spars to the underside of the trolley and lifted that on top of the boat. Never took a chunk of paint out like that. Never used an undercover.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

It depends on the boat Toby. Lasers work well upside down because they have a flat deck, as do things like Dart 15s. If however the deck is curved it often pays to go right way up on the trolley. A couple of guys in the 600s used to roof rack them around right way up on the trolleys and the mothies all do as well.

So you'd put a Zero on upside down, no cover?

Upside down is probably the way I reckon. Covers are good to have but the boat will be cleaner and more scratch free from roofracking.
If that is going to be the primary means of getting about, it may be worth investing in a lightweight launching trolley (less than 45kg or whatever was quoted in the YW video)

That's the plan. A shiny Ali trolley all bunged on the roof, assuming the roof is strong enough (think it's quoted at 70kg capacity).

Good post this cos I'm going through the same dilemma for the D Zero. My problem, and it's same with many saloon cars these days, is the fixings for the roof rack are already built in to the roof of the car, and are really not far apart for the roof bars to support a 13-14ft boat upside down without it being pretty unstable (and there's also v little to tie from and rear straps to on the car). My thought is to put the trolley on first, strap that down giving a stable metal platform,
and then the boat on to that, obviously right way up. Alternative is to spend another 700 quid or so for a 250 road base plus tow hitch which will only get used a few times a year. Still pondering....
