Hi,

Is it possible to taper 7*19 wire so that the outer six strands are peeled back and only the inner strand is left?

I'm intrigued: why would you want to?

Just a work thing, nothing exciting.  I need to use a 6mm cable, but want it to be thinner at the point of attachment.  Loads are very low, so not really worried about breaking.

I've never seen it done. Difficult to imagine how it could be made presentable.I suppose you could peel back all the wires and cut them off then tape over the join, but you've already thought of that.

Yes, that's all I can think of.  Sounds like a bit of a chore!

Why does it need to be 6mm along its length but not at the terminations?

A 6mm cable is about right for the weight I am trying to achieve, but the terminations on a 6mm cable are overly big.

But tapering will compromise the overall strength... Unless you could somehow get the taper under the ferrule. No idea what that would do to the overall strength,  but it might work.

How about just finishing the end with a single round clamp ferrule, and using some sort of keyhole affair to grip onto that - or if possible just thread the wire through a 6mm hole and then put the ferrule on? Or finishing off with a soft eye, not a hard eye. and filing the ferrule down so its not so obtrusive?
I wouldn't even consider a hand spliced eye: there are people who still do it, but the only time I tried I'm sure I put every strand through the skin of one finger or another at least twice...

No idea what this is for, but might you be able to use slimmer wire and then sleeve it to get the 6mm width?
