If a 12ft mono hull can foil and a 70 foot catamaran can foil then there must be plenty of potential in between. Of course it's not for everyone but events like the Olympics must surely move across.

never doubted the potential...it's cost and I would think the dinghy scene will remain foil free generally for a good many years yet!

Look at the arguments from last year's kite/RS:X debacle comparing box-rule to one-design to see why it's unlikely the olympics would embrace any expensive development class.

Once there is an 'affordable' one design foiler, then maybe, but I think that's unlikely as the type of sailor who wants the fastest foiliest thing there is won't be satisfied with standing still in a one design whilst others go quicker, so it will be a long time before it becomes mainstream imho.

Power to weight is important if you want any sort of decent handling and performance. For their size, those AC72s are very light boats.

I doubt the design life of the AC72's was much more than this regatta - foiling like that must put enormous strain on even a carbon structure. A bit expensive for everyday use!

And most of us sail on ponds. Foiling not much use with clumps of weed and short reaches/runs.

However, I can see that we will get foiling beach cats over at Wildwind and the like. And that will be awesome fun.

If the AC45s have a future, I rather hope they all go foiling. Though that would leave the X40s looking very dated!

what's the future of the AC45s now?

And, (by the way) do we know why  the AC72s are so seemingly less prone to burying a hull on bear away than the smaller cats?

Here's hoping the World Series is continued with the AC45 and that the v2 rule of the AC72 isn't too dissimilar as the v1 rule

Foils have transformed Moths from something unbeatable in light weather into something that stays on the beach below F3.

While foils are great, it is just like multihulls about 45 years ago. Undoubtably faster, but a separate branch of sailing rather than something that will replace floating and planing.

I'm already looking at the Merlin, and thumbing through the Class Rules... LOL
I'm not arguing. I'm explaining why I'm right.
