Hi Guys.
So I am going to the Europe Class Worlds this year as the ONLY Brit! How scared am I? VERY. It is also my first ever international event, does anyone have any advice? In particular, things to pack that aren't immediately obvious? I am going to Sonderborg in Denmark in a weeks time by plane, I am borrowing a boat out there however I am taking my own sail, so boat parts and spares I don't need to worry about too much... Any advice with international events would be amazing! Thanks :)

I've done a few and they are generally no different from doing big events at home. The thing that seems to catch people out is local oddities in the SI's; time limits, sailing areas and such so read them carefully, especially as they will have been translated and may not make sense on first reading.
I always try to do the practice race (if there is one) to remove any doubt about the course and race managaement its a horrible feeling when the course is not how you imagined when you read the Si's i.e. Crap, where is the finish line? the first race is not the time to be ironing out these little areas for confusion that could potentially cost you places. If there is loads of boats and a long way to the start get on the water early on the first day so you definitely make the start. If your chartering a boat ensure you have a measurement cert for it, take some cutting compound to just in case to hull finish is not as you'd like. Edited by E.J. - 28 Jul 13 at 12:40pm |

I used to do some work in Sonderborg. Pack light, the plane to Copenhagen is fine but then you end up in a little turbo prop thing that is tiny.
No advice about the racing but enjoy your time there, it's a beautiful place.

I'm not sure about Denmark but in France you must have your insurance certificate with you - worth checking. They don't work on the declaration basis we use in the UK

Eh? Well cut that out immediately, remind us, why are you going? Fun? Is fun and enjoyment any part of the reason, do you think anyone else will be 'scared'? Take it all in your stride remember you're British and from the greatest sailing nation in the world. Make your preparations, do what they have all just told you, but have a positive mental attitude or don't bother, seriously. So you come d.f.l. who cares? Did you enjoy it, will you make new friends from other countries, will you come back knowing more than when you set off? Big events like that, it's all about the start, fight for the pin end, get off in the first rank, if you find you're not cutting it, then go down the middle and deliberately start early, test your boat speed try and get on the pace use it as an uber training event. Most of all, enjoy the sheer numbers, the more there are, the bigger the swings the better it pays consistent sailors who get off the line clean and in that first rank, that is the name of the game. That and loads of other tactical stuff that you probably are already aware of and if you aren't then this is part of your learning process, why not write down everything that went on each race, tell us here, we'll have a laugh with you... |

I'm sure people will be warm and very welcoming to you, so don't stress about it. You've got a common interest regardless of nationality. People will be impressed and touched that you've made the effort. I'd be getting myself prepared for a lot of hospitality......the type of hospitality that leaves a sore head in the morning!!
