Is it acceptable to sail slowly to waste time and thus prevent another race, most likely the last race of the regatta? With time limits for the last race this could be a tactic if you can discard the race and still be in the lead. OK under rule 2?

In such a situation I would expect there would be a time limit on the previous race (20 or 30 minutes after the first boat in the fleet for example) which would prevent such a situation.

I could see a situation arising where the time limit for the second last race finish overlaps the "no warning signals after xx:xx" instruction for the last race. It's an unlikely tactic, and perhaps in breach of Rule 2?

But surely to be able to affect the time limit by slowing down you would need to be so far ahead you wouldn't need to indulge in such tactics. Unless we're talking handicap racing I suppose you might be able to wangle it on average laps

Try reading Case 78. Consider the concepts of 'reasonable chance of her tactics benefiting ...her', and 'sporting reason'. Now tell us, in the light of Case 78, what 'recognized
principles of sportsmanship and fair play' you think the boat may have violated?. Edited by Brass - 28 Jul 13 at 3:22am |

I agree that it does not seem to be different from case 78 apart from the fact that in this case there will be a single boat sailing back and forth alone just to draw out time and prevent RC from starting another race until the time limit for last boat to finish. If say SI says no warning signal after 15:00 and DNF for finishing 30 minutes after first boat then if first boat finishes at 14:30, you are in the lead and can afford to discard the last race and still win, then it makes sense to sail back and forth until 15:00 to make sure there will be no more races.

Do not forget that most events also have a 'stragglers' rule in their SI's which permits the PRO to finish boats that are well behind the fleet.

One day open- 3 races, 2 to count Three are known to be OCS, so don't finish at the finish line, can conservative colin dwardle around long enough to prevent R2 from starting, thus take the open ... sounds like a viable option for a winter event with failing light, albeit one very sh*t event not many would go back to again.

Then the RO could simply finish after 1 lap....if it is clear he is not sailing they could abandon the race.

Yellowelly: pretty contrived scenario. Middle of winter, dark coming on: Wouldn't the other competitors be more likely to buy beers than complain?
Jeffers: RO can't shorten 'retrospectively' (unless you've got some weird multi-lap SI). Normally Shorten Course signal has to be made before any boat reaches the shortened course finish. What on earth do you mean by 'not sailing'?
