A rare trip out racing yachts in the Solent: we were beating to windward in light airs on starboard with a yacht crossing in front of us on port.
The port tack boat realised he was in danger of not crossing clear in front. The helm hailed: "Do you want me to hold my course?" Presumably the alternative he was offering was a crash tack right in front of me. I was too flummoxed to give a reply. I've never heard that before in dinghies. Any smart answers for future yachting trips?

Asking is perhaps a bit cheek, but it very often makes sense to let them go rather than getting bogged down with them.
Particularly if they are a different class in a different race. It's quite common to ask a port tacker to hold their course, better to duck a metre or two and get on with your own race. Often they will be crossing but with not enough margin for 2x £100k or whatever. |

Front of fleet, pro-skipper, same class, same race.
I guess we put it down to local custom. Edited by roadrunner - 16 Jun 13 at 9:52pm |

pretty standard when yacht racing as the wind shaddows and issues with a boat crash tacking,
ill call regually and will wait for a wave from the tactition before deciding to duck, |

I don't think it's that bizarre. Imagine if the starboard tacker panics and tries to duck the other boat, just as the port tacker crash tacks? Even small sportsboats can cause unbelievable damage in situations like that (as we found out a few weeks ago...), it's not like two lasers banging together. :( Definitely worth asking the other boat what they want you to do.

Still reckon its always safer if people follow the rules to the letter. If you can't easily cross tack or duck leaving plenty of room. Everyone knows where they are.

Get the tactics of letting him crossing rather than sitting dead ahead or in a lee bow....
But normally the question is asked 'Can I cross?' From the description this was asked too late, and in an off way....Obviously with forum specs but: 'I'll carry on then do my turn' might have been been more appropriate!

In my experience "yachties" tend to view adherence to the rules as strictly optional. The level to which you can ignore them depends on how well in you are with the boys back at the yacht club that will be providing the protest committee (personal experience - having had a protest thrown out against someone who bore away into me on the reach because "it's customary if you have shown a protest flag to point it out to the race committee once you've finished, so the protest is invalid as a protest flag was not flown". Yes Royal Thames, I'm talking about you).
Obviously it would unfair to judge all of them on that basis... just so happens others I know have had the same experience
