We are planning to tow the boat (420) on a single trailer to France this summer.
What height would you tell the ferry company the trailer is? Do you include the highest part of the mast that is over the car? Thank sfor any info. Regards Graham |

I have had to in the past, but maybe it depends on the ferry company?
They want to know the height at Brittany ferries (and the others, I guess) not just to gouge more money out of you (though this does appear to be a major motivation) but to work out where to put you on the ferry - some places have limited height. It is worth reducing the mast support height to a minimum, and then raising the transom end so the mast stays below 6 feet, if at all possible, at least for the ferry journey. |

I think you have to tell them what the highest bit is or risk being put somewhere where you rip the mast off the trailer on the deck above. If it makes a difference why not put the mast on a roofrack?

Bearing in mind that some ferry ramps give you quite fiece changes in gradient, so the mast needs to clear the car by a good margin. Some people seem to put the mast on a roof rack over hanging the trailer. |

As others have basically said, DO NOT LIE. The information is important for the loaders. If they suspect you're taller than declared, they'll measure you and either bill you accordingly or even deny you boarding, if the appropriate deck is full up. The same with length, obviously. Do not try and get away with paying less, as not being allowed on is, relatively speaking, vastly more expensive! We came back from France last year on the cat from Cherbourg- with the mast carefully adjusted, we were within the height limit for the main deck. Just. This really entertained the deck crew. |

Being high is cheaper than being long. Putting a 420 on the roof probably isn't a sensible option, but my old NS 14 was bigger than a 420 and much cheaper to transport on the roof than to trail it.

The tunnel might be easier as there's only two possible heights - car (up to 1.8metres) or the rest.
And you can cash in your Tesco rewards vouchers to pay for it! Edited by patj - 23 Apr 13 at 6:19am |

Although the extra fuel cost would have offset the saving a bit...

We towed 2 F18 Catamarans stacked one on top of the other with masts on top on the ferry. Height was no problem but tell them all dimentions, including full length of car and boat together.
