Painting foils

   I'm having some foils refurbed at a car body shop, The owner insists that car enamel is superior to 2 pack poly for marine applications. I cannot argue as I am only aware of 2 pack as an option, what is the truth; can car enamel be used as an acceptable paint for foils or is it black and white i.e. do not use?

	car paint is pretty widely used, but has the reputation of being more easily scratched.

	2K acrylic car paint is actually chemically very similar (ie the same), as many marine polyurethanes, as they are often formulated with acrylic resins in them. So no problem there ( this is not cellulose 1K car paint though). When I have sprayed 2K acrylic onto foils I have always put on a good epoxy primer first to ensure that it all sticks. If this is a high build primer you can also use it to do a degree of fairing to the surface. The car paint shop should have something like this around, although they may want to use a polyester based material which (Will not be as good as an epoxy ).

	What you need to get them to do is put plasticiser in the paint so it can flex without cracking otherwise you will find your lovely smooth finish might not last too long.

	Just got the foils back from the shop and they look glass perfect. I am assuming that this perfect finish is unsustanable, but I hope that the paint responds well to boat polish. The paint certainly does seem to scratch more easily but this may be reduced in the long term when a more realistic and sustainable level of finish is acheived.
