Anyone else following the Shaw 4 thread on Sailing Anarchy?

It would be interesting to get a more UK perspective on this new boat development.  Apart from the usual cynical view of anything new / laser/solo killers don't stand a chance, what do folks think of the programme?

Probably best to look at the blog rather than SA, as imho there's far too much noise and not enough clarity on that thread for informed viewing.

A few photos and details from the official website:

Yup, I've been following progress and tyre kicking. Kudos to him for getting off his back side to do something, and there is the seed of a good idea there. But I must admit I think the carbon construction is overkill and I'm not really a fan of the hull shape and size.

With little rocker and such a draggy stern this will not be a great inland boat. It will be interesting to see if the dreadnought bow helps upwind in waves, as it may slam a bit as well. Should have reasonable stability with the chine.

The problem with this market is you have a lot of boats which are easy to sail, have large numbers and reasonable all round performance. This looks like a boat that will be fun in a breeze on open water. For me it needs to be more of an all rounder, this would require a narrower waterline towards the stern, and more rocker. It looks very 90's at the back. Development hiking classes have gone a bit more rounded, and less extreme to get that all round performance.

A lot of these boats tend to be one trick ponies, or too difficult for Jo average. I hope I am wrong, but the problem is there is little wrong with the existing classes that now have modern controls and modern build quality.

Looks good to me. It's a combo of an older Cherub and a Farr 3.7 with something else.
Needs to sail more...

Credit to him for giving it a go, I agree with what's been said above, fast ish sea boat will be slow inland, making me even more convinced to give my second incarnation a go, wish I had access to a local boat builder I actually think I have an allround solution kicking about my skull at last.

Disagree about existing classes, if all we can look to for the future is pink solo's, it is a very sad tomorrow.

I agree with the above points too... and applaud the development.   But I also think it would be a bit sticky for small inland work, despite the nice stumpy boat length.

There's a lot of comparison going on on SA with the 300... basically because the words 'fast', 'unarig' and 'unstayed' have come up.  However with that transom, it looks to me that it would be more akin to our Blaze, rather than the 300, just shorter, therefore a good deal slower in the sub-planing conditions most hiking dinghies find themselves in in the UK.

A clear candidate for a T foil rudder then?

I agree... and you can't be all things to all people anyway.  The one thing I would happily junk from my current steed is the centreboard and its infernal casing and slot gasket.  (Not that I've had a problem with the slot gasket yet... but it's only a matter of time.)  The case itself just takes up a lot of room and imho, makes the boat fairly marmite from the sailing characteristics compared to newer, open cockpit designs.

However this is the one attribute that Grumpf says is essential in a boat... couched around moving the CLR around a bit, when in truth it's 'cos he lands in shoredump at a malevolent beach.

Yep I thought that, and as to PM's questioning the Centre Board, yes ingrained a bit from sailing boards, but interesting since I've been sailing the EPS with a dagger and countless times I've gotten stuck on submerged shallows, I'd still rather have it than not. The one thing the V2 did prove was that a slot flusher free design is possible and would be a feature if I ever get V3 off the drawing board.

So, lakes with shallows, coastal shore dumps, rivers, all really need a centreboard, building without is just cheaper and easier.
