Are the new Speed Sails 'team' all using sail numbers along the lines of '55' as a cheap advertising ploy is it that me being cycnical?
 
At the Tiger I saw a number of them;
 
555 Fireball
550 Merlin
552 Osprey
55 Enterprise
55 Phantom
 
Without wanting to get to 'picky' over class rules I'm sure these arent the actual hull numbers. I remember writing a letter to the race officer at events to request permission to use a sail number which wasnt the hull number. I didnt see any of these notes on the Official Notice Board at the Tiger.
 
When I sailed a Laser people liked sail numbers with '1's in because the number was shorter and stayed nearer the leech allowing you to be further over the startline before reading your number! These all have short numbers.

I saw an FRP Enterprise with 55 on its sail at the Blithfield Barrel last year. Clearly not really no 55. I assume he had the ROs permission. I beat him on the day anyway so I can't see that the number gave him any big advantage.

Clearly advertising, quite clever as long as the appropriate change of sail number was requested.

I think Pierre is right about the Osprey - a near 50 year old boat well sailed.

This never really occurred to me. Our Byte has gone through 3 hulls and we have sails with 3 different numbers all of which are used. The Ladies and Gentlemen of the Byte fleet are far to polite to object to this. The two Lightnings in the family have no numbers on the hulls at all! The now sold Solo had 2591 on the sail but no discernible hull number.

The Osprey was sailed by Mike Pickering who I'm fairly certainly has a relativey new Hartley boat and a shiney set of Speed Sails I'm guessing!

Not sure about the numbers but, is the laminate that's been used for the mainsail legal? It looks like the same stuff that was used on the Merlin that won the Tiger Trophy a couple of years ago and then retired.

I think Banks Sails make the sails for Speed now, they have In House Certification, so it should be OK, but I thought the Merlins and Fireballs had similar rules on materials.

Yes, it is Speed Sails advertising, and no the numbers are not the correct hull numbers. Hence my comment in the 420 rudder thread about it generally being the manufacturers taking the pi"55" while the individual competitors are generally as far as I know sticking to the rules at the winter handicap events.

For the Dash, several boats arrived at registration and handed in scratty bits of paper with hand scribbled notes asking to use sail number 55 and thinking no more of it at the time we accepted them. But then they all stood round discussing it and it became apparent to our registration team what had happened.

They caused more than a few headaches when we were trying to compile our results, as you can imagine trying to finish 90 odd boats and get times all in one go didn't always allow for classes to be read out so we only had sail numbers to go off in some instances. And with 5 or 6 boats of different class all with the same sail number it wasn't always apparent which was which. Pretty selfish really.

We mentioned it for the other events in the series and so they asked them to add the extra sail numbers to the 55's.

To be honest, had i not been told what they were trying to say I would never have put two and two together so not really sure how successful it is as advertising. To me it looks a bit like those people that squash numbers up on numberplates to make them look like they are trying to say a word but don't quite manage it.....

I think we should insist the correct number is used, we have a system in place and this is the start of a slippery slope to every body using what ever numbers they like and as said in a earlier post causes issues with lap scorers etc. Speed sails have had bad press in the past and should know better.
