Does your club offer sailing on weekdays/nights?  If so, what format does it take - training, juniors, racing, cruising?  Is it popular?  Has it affected the success of the  club as a whole ie more members, more people racing at weekends?

If your club doesn't offer weekday sailing, would you go along if it did, and what nights/days would suit you best?  What would make you most likely to go - training, racing, cruising?  Or is sailing something you just do at weekends?
the same, but different...

Hi Wingit
lOSSC runs Tuesday evening races which are the best attended of any series and this year we will be doing a gentle intro to racing on Thursday evenings for the training groups to try and bridge the gap to club racing which they seem to be scared of.
So if your club does not offer weekday racing start it or join another. you cannot beat a lovely evening sail followed by a beer and banter.

We have Adult training on Tuesday evenings in the summer, racing on Wednesdays. We offer cheap Wednesday only membership, which does have a small takeup.

At Whitefriars we do the usual Wed night race, running from early April to early Sept, and over the summer run a "supervised Sailing" session (usually with a BBQ or similar) on a Friday late afternoon/evening.

Last year, the weather got in the way of this rather, but in 2011 it was very popular.

Some weekday training courses are run if there are takers, too.

I'd love it if there was a club near me that offered weeknight racing and a (reduced rate) membership for just that- ie what Jim describes. The club most accesible to me (having no car!) doesn't do weeknights at all

SSC race on summer Wednesday evenings from the club line in the river / harbour, and its quite popular. Shame I can't get there in time  Unhappy. (Sundays is ctte boat start out at sea). My last club (little pond near Farnham) also race Weds eve and it is very popular. They also offer a reduced 'midweek' membership rate - or used to.

At Shearwater you can officially sail any day dawn to dusk, March to end November but are advised not to sail alone - have a shore watcher or two boats out.
Over at Cheddar it's very different as you can't sail without safety cover and that's only weekends and wednesday night in summer.
Personally I think it's quite a big factor these days in keeping people in the sport as so many jobs now require weekend/evening working that those people don't get the opportunity to sail when most of us do. I've visited a few clubs that have weekday sailing and many retired sailors also take the chance to get out then as well as the weekend workers.

Would add to Jim's comment that I think our Wednesday evening series is probably the most competitive of all the series in terms of turnout and quality of the racing. Suggests that people really do like it.

In actual fact I've just persuaded my wife who hasn't sailed in a dinghy for 13 years to race with me in this years Wednesday series. It only works cause we can have use of a babysitter in the evenings, which we can't during the weekend.

I sail in the Victory Class out of Portsmouth and we race Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The evening racing is easily the most popular.
