All over the Mail this morning, Captain Calamity a Cornish Cat sailor who's now been rescued fifteen times by the local RNLI has recently been pulled out again this time through being becalmed then flipped by waves.

Makes you wonder how many times he should be allowed to sail the thing, but then there's nothing anyone can do to stop him even though the fact he's doing this is going to highlight that fact to other authorities, someone really should have a word with him. Linky

I know where you are coming from but the trouble is that he may not be calling the RNLI and people who see the cat capsized will do it as they think that its in trouble.

On a different note i see the Mail is up to its usual standards with this report. The cat is clearly a Dart 18 which would show up in a 2 second google search and as such is 18 foot and not 16.

The guy is clearly an idiot with no sense of shame. Got to love how the Daily Fail has sensationalised it though.

The only way round this is regulation of our sport. Do you really want that?

I do feel that he should be liable for the cost of the call outs though (same as you get charged when you are in a car crash for your treatment although your insurance usually pays for this).

amongest many things he gets wrong:
‘My boat has been in mortal danger many times but that’s replaceable. I’m not in danger.

I beg to differ. If you've got an 18ft flipped and crashing down on you in surf like that, you most definitely are in danger. He's not "pushing the boundaries of sailing", he's a pillock that endangers himself and by extension the RNLI volunteers that pick up the pieces.

But then what can you do? I'm pretty sure everyone on here would agree that we really don't want the sort of legislation that could stop idiots like that guy.

no, no legislation thank you.  And no he shouldn't be charged for the call out if he hasn't requested assistance either.  Perhaps someone with a rib can follow him next time and claim salvage?  Would that apply in home waters???

He's no more in danger than some of the numpties on foamies you get out down there; it's just his kit is bigger and makes a better story in the Daily Rant.  He might be auditioning for a Darwin Award, but in truth, that's his right isn't it?  Britain is richer for its quirky characters like this chap... all power to him, besides he makes a Dart 18 look far more interesting than the Class Association could!

the bigger question from my point of view is why is the RNLI funded by donation and run by volunteers, rather than being paid for out of the official purse like the other rescue services?

Surely because they prefer to have autonomy of their budgets and SOPs?  And they also contract with local authorities for beach patrol in places like Fistral, so they're not without tax payer contribution... they're called 'Surf Nazis' down there because of this.

I do get your point though... I'd guess the Coastgaurd would be responsible for assisting you if it weren't for the RNLI, although I guess their remit would cover more getting your remains back to your family for a sub-terrainean burial, rather than fishing you out rapid-response styley.

didnt know about the surf nazis :-) or the council funding, interesting - but I still think we should pay the RNLI properly

as to the good captain - why doesn't he (i) learn to sail  and (ii) get a decent crew to help him?
